I used to sleep on my stomach but since getting pregnancy I have switched to sleeping on my side but am just finding it really hard to get comfortable and am only 20 weeks pregnant!

sleep on your side .. put a pillow between your legs and bend the upper leg over it

that was how I got comfy

hope it helps

I was exactly the same as you hun, the oly way i could get to sleep and sleep through the night was on my tummy. Now i'm nearly 22 weeks i am at my wits end, sleep!! what sleep??? I have bought a 'multi purpose support cushion from mothercare (£20), shaped like a boomerang (can be used for nursing afterwards amongst lots of other things) i wedge that under my tummy and raise my one leg onto the bottom of it, it kinda hugs me - or i hug it either way it means i can half lay on my tummy but bump is nicely supported!
Give it a go, it may help - if not one of those cushions then try 1-2 pillows instead!
Hope you find comfort one way or the other

I got a small wedge pillow from Mothercare which I put under my bump and a pillow between my legs - really helps - but is a real pallover (sp) when I want to turn over. (You wait until you are 10 days overdue like me - that's uncomfortable )

twisty · 08/02/2006 19:31

Thanks for that - heard about those mothercare cushions but couldn't find them last time I ventured out shopping - maybe I will look on the mothercare website - they sound terrific - what with uncomfiness and 5 million loo trips an hour the lack of sleep is really starting to get on my nerves!

I have just bought an orthopeadic pillow - shaped like a V. Its lovely.

Sparklemagic · 08/02/2006 19:35

they do say that these loo trips and being uncomfortable in bed are natures way of preparing you for sleep deprivation when baby comes........

Surfermum · 08/02/2006 19:36

I ended up with loads of pillows - nothing special, just pillows. The one between the legs definitely helped, then I had one or two under my bump (not on top of each other) and on both sides of me so I could turn from one side to the other.

This has brought it all back to me how uncomfortable it was at night. Not only needing all those pillows, but having to get up and wee in the middle of the night too!

twisty · 08/02/2006 19:38

Yep - heard that too about preparing us for sleep deprivation!

Any pillow under the bump or legs will help.

Also, roll onto your side when getting out of bed

pesme · 08/02/2006 20:02

also sleep with a duvet under you to soften the 'load'. and do the pillow thing. oh and get a bigger duvet for on top cos withall this padding you are going to hog the covers. dh said it was like sleeping next to the elephant man, nice.

pesme · 08/02/2006 20:03

nobody needs prepared for sleep deprivation get comfie!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 08/02/2006 20:09

I had to sleep on the sofa for much of my pg, couldnt face the bed! Found that if I propped my back against the back of the sofa, I felt more supported. I then put a v shape pillow (from local market for £5, dont have to spend a fortune on these!) between my legs and had cushions under my tummy!

And of course, you find that just as you get comfy - you need the loo!

conni · 10/02/2006 23:36

I tried to sleep on my left side from 26 weeks onwards (for baby positioning) which gave me very painful left hip. I used the long V-shaped pillow, but probably it is worthwhile to also get a sheepskin (can later use it for baby) to put under your left hip. Now I alternate between sleeping in bed on left side and sleeping on bellybag (large beanbag with hole in the middle for belly - bought over the internet). Advantage of belly bag is that you can lay face down - also good for massage, but also on your side because moulds around your body. Disadvantage is that it takes up a lot of space, so not very practical on the bed, hence I use it on the floor. Also, because it moulds around you, once you lay down it is quite a palava to get up especially when you get very big. Nevertheless, I am definitely sleeping a lot better since I got it.

SleepyJess · 10/02/2006 23:38

Yes.. would also recommend the duvet solution.. get a spare double one.. fold it in half and have it under your bottom sheet just on your side of the bed. It's bliss even when heavy with child!

Wishing you peaceful nights..

Funny how we all have the same advice on what is comfy!

If you can't find the mothercare pillow. I know Argos do the V-pillows as do Dunelm Mill (£7) and some local markets. I have two one for between my knees and under my bump and one by the side of the bed if I need to raise my top half to avoid the dreaded heartburn! Pregnancy is a glamorous business isn't it!

Oh - those V-pillows are just the best thing for the first few days of breast feeding too, and for putting behind your little one when they start sitting on the floor - you'll use it for years! (I also took mine into hospital as they only allow one pillow per bed here! - after a section who are they kidding! plus its great for leaning on in labour and for the first few tries at feeding) ((bit evangelical about this aren't I?))

Well its expensive but...we bought a Tempur foam mattress about 7 years ago and I can honestly say my bed is the most comfortable place in the world when I am pg - I stayed at a friends a few weeks ago with a 'normal' mattress and couldnt believe how uncomfortable it was - I was tossing and turning all night.
