I have really itchy discharging eyes which are obviously infected and i have just used some chlorenphenical eye drops,as they were eye drops and i wasn't actually ingesting anything i assumed they would be fine, however i have just googled and it say's definately not to be used in pregnancy,i'm really cross and annoyed with myself,i'm normally really careful,i know i can't do anything about it now but i just need to vent about what an idiot i'am Angry

Ouch. Sore eyes are awful. Try not to beat yourself up about it. If you are worried, you could take the drops to the pharmacy tomorrow and ask why they can't be used and what they recommend instead. I hope your eyes get better quickly.

Thanks thereistheball
I had a look on google and it says that chlorenphenical can cause something called grays syndrome in babies Sad
It does read as though that is due to prolonged use,so hopefully 1 dose would be negligible,i still feel really annoyed and silly though for not checking in the first place.

I can sympathise! I also have conjunctivitis, and it's getting annoying - I can't put my contacts in and I keep waking up with my eyelids glued together! I went to my local minor injuries unit after my scan on Tuesday (it's on the way out of the hospital so I thought I'd kill 2 birds with one stone Grin) and saw a dr there. He tried to prescribe me some chloramphenicol drops but I'm a nurse and knew they weren't recommended but it seems he didn't, he said that he's been prescribing it to pregnant women for years so the risks obviously aren't that well known so I wouldn't worry. At my insistence he prescribed me some fusidic acid drops instead - they are also more convenient as chloramphenicol needs to be used 2 hourly, fusidic acid is twice a day. You can't buy it over the counter like chloramphenicol so you will need to see your GP.

Seriously, don't worry about one dose, you will have hardly ingested any and as I said if the drs prescribing it don't know the risks they can't be that high.

Try not to worry! Chloramphencol can also be taken orally for other conditions and that is where the risk lies with grey baby. I suffer from blepharitis and had it really badly when pg with ds and the gp told me not to worry as the chance of anything going from eye to baby was exceptionally small.

I chose not to take more than a couple of doses just to err on the side of caution.

Gps sometimes prescribe chloramphenicol to pregnant women who have severe eye infections. Do not worry one dose will be fine. Try cold tea to bathe eyes in. It has antiseptic properties which help clear up infections.
