Yes this is lazy, but Amazon recommendations aren't cutting it for me today. I'm hoping to stock up on a few can't-put-down-totally-all-engrossing novels to occupy the coming days and nights!

Nothing too clever or stretchy but nothing too airport trash vomit-inducing. Can't be doing with something that takes 8 chapters to get into. Anyone read anything recently worth writing home about?

Things that recently went down well were Time Travellers Wife, The Help, Go To Sleep and yes, embarrassingly I did like all the Harry Potter books.

One Day was just a bit too naff for me, couldn't put my finger on it :-/ (yes I know that's hard to say following my last admission...)

Thanks ladies! p.s. I'm sorry if there is a book section I should probably be posting this in...?

"Every Last One" by Anna Quindlen was un-put-down-able

Others I've enjoyed recently:
"A cupboard full of coats" Yvette Edwards
"The girl with the glass feet" Ali Shaw
"On Canaan's Side" Sebastian Barry

Also really loved "Room" as a lot of others did

MissPollysTrolleyed · 16/04/2012 21:04

Another Sebastian Barry one - The Secret Scripture. A touch bleak but a real page-turner and beautifully written. This would definitely be in my literary Top 10. I haven't read "On Canaan's Side" yet "Haggis* so you've inspired another Amazon purchase!

I second Donna Tartt - The Secret History.

If you're looking for something a little lighter, I love anything by Anne Tyler for simple, heart-warming stories of ordinary lives. The first I read was Digging to America about two families who adopt kids from abroad.

Try The God of small things, Life of Pi and The Handmaid's Tale.

For light easy read, anything by Sophie Kinsella. I dont normally like chick lit but I love her....esp shopaholic series....

For total un puttdownable engrossing, -gone with the wind.....

also love nealry all of Purplecatti choices.

I'm terrible at reading fiction - tend to prefer factual books - but I get really sucked into all the Wallander (Henning Mankell) novels I've read. No good if you don't like crime fiction though.

Oh, and "Perfume" by Walter Susskind.
