What is the name for the type of scan that shows where the cord is please - 38 weeks

After DS's birth, which ended in EMCS for failure to progress, partly because the cord was wrapped round his neck and legs (which we didn't realise until he was delivered), I am keen to try and find out, in advance of this labour, where the cord is with DC2.

I don't minf paying privately for this kind of scan, though I would obviously prefer not to! But what kind of scan should I be asking for please? And is there any chance of getting this on the NHS? I am going for a VBAC this time.

Is it a Doppler Scan? I had one of these at 24 weeks to determine the likelyhood of me getting Eclampsia again in 2nd n third preg. They checked the cord flow and location too :)

Tollysfolly · 10/04/2012 20:55

they won't check Doppler flow in a fetal cord until 27 weeks. and they do not scan for whereabouts Of the cord as it can change site so quickly. half an hour after a scan it can move again. don't waste your money on a private scan!

doppler to meadure resistance and flow to and from the placenta. you should ask them to poss check this at a 30 somthing scan as youll want to.know this much closer to labour!?

Happy, what would you do with the info though?

As Tolly says it could move. even if it's wrapped around the baby's neck, it may not cause any problems at all.

Totally pointless scan though to be honest, loads of babies are wrapped in cord and just unravel as they are born, it doesnt mean they will or wont be born naturally.
Better focused your time on getting you baby in a good position, which makes lots of difference. Google optimal fetal positioning.

HappyAsEyeAm · 11/04/2012 10:05

I am 38 weeks and the baby is 2/5 engaged.

If the cord is wrapped rund his/her neck and legs (like it was with DS when he was delivered by EMCS), I am going to ask for an ELCS. I don't mind going along with the plan for a VBAC, but if there is no chance of the baby being delivered naturally due to the length and positioning of the cord (as this was what the consultant told me when she whipped out DS), I am not going to put myself through labour!

but the cord can and does move, you babies head will also engage and unengage so one scan may show it is wrapped around the baby and then another one 20 mins later may show its not, or vice versa.

you can ask but i doubt you will get far tbh.
