Our hospital charges £6 for each one. To be honest DP and I don't mind as we are not badly off and know it goes back into maternity services but we worry that it must feel a huge amount to some parents :( The hospital are quite clear they have to be paid for.

We were talking late last night and thought that maybe we could leave £30 with the hospital so that 5 mums can get a photo who may otherwise struggle to afford them. I've already seen one mum in floods of tears because she couldn't afford it that week and given her £5 towards it but it made me so sad :( I know how much pleasure ours gives us and our family - especially dd who can't wait to be a big sister

At my 11wk scan I got 2 pics for free, at 13wk scan got 2 for $2 (no pound sign on my phone) as she felt sorry for me that I was on my own :) and at 20wk scan was 1 for $2 (what it's supposed to be) as there was only 1 decent shot! The hospital has signs in the us waiting room but its the sonographer that takes the cash. I didn't feel it was an unreasonable amount, but think anything over that would be unfair. Well done you for helping others out :o

susiegrapevine · 07/04/2012 10:34

We pay ?5 for 3 at our hospital. But you always get 4 so I guess if you say no to photos you get one for free. To be honest if anything is unreasonable at our hospital its the parking charges which are more than it is to park in town! Dunno what you do if you've not got much spare money! Could be you can't afford scan photos cos you had to pay for parking!

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 07/04/2012 10:42

£3 a print in my local hospital but you sometimes get extras if they have been trying to get a good view and had to take a few different images.

When I had my 12 week scan with DS1 I got about 20 free. The sonographer remembered that she'd scanned me 12 weeks previously to confirm that I'd miscarried. She said she was so happy to see me back with some good news that she wanted to give me a present!

McPopcornMouseNFries · 07/04/2012 11:21

£10 here :( but worth every penny

nenehooo · 07/04/2012 11:56

We were told we'd have to pay £5. The sonographer gave us 11 and told us not to to tell anyone or she'd get in trouble [bugrin]
Think it's a lovely idea to donate more, might try to do that at my 20 week scan.

OctoberOctober · 07/04/2012 12:47

That is a lovely gesture OP.

They are £3 each here.

signet2012 · 07/04/2012 13:29

We paid 2.50 each and got 7. They are only 2 inches wide and 2 inches long though, some hospitals seem to do bigger ones.

MissPenteuth · 07/04/2012 13:35

I've had five scans at the same hospital (three last pregnancy, two so far this time). Four times they gave us between 2 and 5 photos for free. One time (20w scan) they would have charged, but I had a seizure and the sonographer didn't get great photos, so she gave us them for free.

Bearhugs43 · 07/04/2012 18:52

£3 each (but only one image) - so no-one would want more than one when they scan/copy so well. There is a pay machine to buy tokens. Am flabbergasted at how much some posters here have been charged Sad

Yummymummyyobe1 · 07/04/2012 19:01

Our hospital charge £2.50 a picture but more often than not they tell you to pay for one and give you a few free. At the 20 week scan we ended up with 5 free because they were running late which was really nice of them. xx

treedelivery · 07/04/2012 19:07

£2 for ours. The paper rolls costs a fortune although since lots of trusts went to computer based image saving it isn't so bad. If the department print off and save the scan though, it can be 20+ pictures.

Lovely idea to donate. Good for you.

MimsyBorogroves · 07/04/2012 19:24

With DS1 it was £3 "a photo" - but really we came away with 3/4 on each scan (12w and 20w)

With DS2 (different area) it was £10 a photo(!!!). With the 12w scan we had to hand over our money immediately and got 1 photo. Our 20w scan more than made up for it - she was amazing, spent ages showing us everything on the scan, then showed us 4 photos: "aw, you've got to have this one, he's sucking his fingers...and this one you can see his jaw clearly..." then ushered us out when DH moved for his wallet. Grin

I love the idea of paying for someone who couldnt afford it, OP. Wish we had thought of that at the time.

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 07/04/2012 20:45

Ours are £6 for 3

fatmummy35 · 08/04/2012 00:36

What a lovely jesture OP.

However I can't help thinking that if people can't afford the £5 for a photo how on earth are they going to afford to actually raise the baby!!

goingmadtrying · 08/04/2012 05:09

ours are £3 each so you tell the sonographer how many you want, i am having twins though and get a couple each time, you used to pay the sonographer, but they now have a machine where you can pay by card! or cash but it doesn't give change, so if you only have a £5 note it costs you that, you are sent out the room to pay then go back in with your receipt and collect the photos, they only print off how many you pay for, my mum ended up with 3 which is random as there was 1 of twin 1 and 2 of twin 2 Hmm in all honesty they were good profile shots and i asked him to print 2 of each but don't think he actually got it so i didn't have any, i don't mind paying but don't think it should be a way to make money for the trust, i agree that they do that with parking charges! they should come up with a cheaper option of emailing you or texting, which would last longer and cost them less

danielou · 08/04/2012 05:41

Ours is £10 for 3 or £5 for 1 and that goes for 12 weeks and 20weeks which I find very expensive for those ion low income. But what a lovely idea op :)

PeelingmyselfofftheCeiling · 08/04/2012 06:08

I think they asked for a nominal amount at our hospital, but right from the first scan the sonographer said she doesn't charge twin mums as we have so many extra costs Smile. They were scanning me every 2 minutes at one point too.

goingmadtrying · 08/04/2012 07:44

peeling the consultant doesn't charge me although when going to scan room ie for anomaly scan i had to pay for each photo so the minimum we could have was 2 as they are too big to fit on one pic x i agree with twin mummies having extra costs 2 of most things isn't cheap Grin

SarryB · 08/04/2012 09:53

I had my 12 week at a different hospital to my 20 week due to a house move.

At the 12 week one, it was supposed to be £5 for 3 pictures (which I'd also been told on my appointment letter), but the sonographer wouldn't take my money as we had to wait AGES to be seen.

At the 20 week one, I got 7 pictures altogether (some really great ones too!) and they just took donations. So we popped £15 in the tin. The fab pictures almost made up for the fact that they don't tell you the gender.

I think that it's a lovely idea to donate!

CherryBlossom27 · 08/04/2012 09:55

Our hospital charged £5 per photo...very expensive IMO, but it's not something you want to pass up on buying! That's a really nice idea to leave some money for others :)

justhayley · 08/04/2012 11:12

OMG OP I'm crying at your post. What a kind thing to do, that lady will most likely remember You for years and years. Mine are £5 for one although usually they give u 2, & at an additional scan I had for reduced movements they didn't charge anything. I agree that it should be donation based as some people would probably leave more anyway. It's horrible to think some mums can't have a pic due to finances! If I was working on the reception I would def be slipping a few free ones to genuine women who couldn't afford to pay. My hospital print them regardless if u want them, so if u couldn't afford them they would just be chucked away I guess - total waste.

5madthings · 08/04/2012 11:27

OP its a lovely thing to do :)

at our hospital it is £3 per pic i think? but depending on the sonographer you often get a few extra for free :)

izzybizzybuzzybees · 08/04/2012 11:34

Ours has a sign saying minimum donation is £1. I had a scan because of a big bleed and last week had a follow up. No picture offered and we didnt ask as we had no money on us. I will pay for our 12 week one tho!

BoysWillGrow · 08/04/2012 21:30

Ours is £5 per photo, considering the pic is no bigger than the palm of your hand, I don't see how they justify it. Mil asked if we could get a couple pics for her whilst we were there, and at the time we just couldn't afford the extras For her Sad
