Hi

I'm 36wks, and have caught a really nasty chesty cough which typically starts around 10pm and then calms down by morning. Not getting any sleep anyway what with heartburn and normal trying to get comfy/going for a wee all the time...

Am going to make myself a honey and lemon now but have gestational diabetes so can't even have it constantly....anyone else suffering, what's your remedy?

Coughing also gives me BHicks which I've never had so many of (this is my 4th) aren't they weird Confused !!

I am taking guava syrup for my ongoing cough, but it has honey in it, so may not work for you if you have GD.

I've had it day and night for 3 weeks, I'm 37+3 and strangely enough found that peptac liquid, for the heartburn works a treat to ease the ticklyness in my throat

I had it a few weeks ago and it turned into a chest infection so be careful. I was stupid tho and insisted on carrying on at work till I totally lost my voice and doc and mw gave me a telling off with antibiotics. I took simple linctus with it but not sure about that if you have GD as it seems quite sugary.

It's horrible, there seems to be loads of it about around here and the doctor is telling people to expect to put up with it for 8 weeks Sad.

Morrisons own brand glycerine syrup seemed to help mine and it's only 99p a bottle.

Pain in the arse isn't it.

sharond101 · 07/04/2012 22:04

YOu can get sugar free simple linctus from the chemist. An extra pillow can help through the night.

I had a right rotten cold and cough for about a fortnight, but if you have heartburn anyway, and you're only getting the cough at night, it sounds like it is the heartburn that is making you cough, especially if you don't really have any other symptoms.

urgh sorry your poorly. there is a very good lung herb called mullein you can get in tincture or tea form from herbal shop, health food shop or similar. it is brilliant lung tonic and i am sure okay in preg but you wld need to double check. neal's yard are always good at offering advice and wld tell you if any problems with the herb but am sure there aren't. i have recommended this for bronchitis and also a very close hospital case and it seems to be a little miracle worker! get well soon.

If it's a tickle in your throat setting you off Strepsil extra strength work well as they kind of numb your throat and you can't feel the tickle. OOH doc told me they were fine. But as sparkle says do see doc if it isn't clearing up.

thanks all, I 've had a couple of bad days, typically over easter so doctors difficult to get hold of but it seems to be improving on its own.

I do get heartburn so I've tried taking Gaviscon more regularly which has helped a bit but I've pulled my tummy muscles coughing! ah well hopefully its a good workout!

i had this, i was surprised to find that paracetamol actually helped to calm down the coughing a bit (despite there not being pain, but rather irritation iyswim). i wasn't able to sleep without it.

i read up later and it might be that because paracetamol reduces inflammation to some extent, it probably also calms down those inflamed cilia (little hair-like cells that trigger coughing when there's something in your throat -- but also when they are infected with a virus, i.e. when there's nothing in your throat but your cough reflex is still being triggered by the inflammation)

i did

  • paracetamol
  • lemon and honey a few times a day
  • humidifier at night
  • long steamy showers in evening
  • propping myself up on an extra pillow at night
  • boiled sweets

...and it wasn't too bad in the end actually.

hope you feel better soon!

I had an awful cough a few months ago, nearly being sick I was coughing so much. The doctor gave me an inhaler to try and make sure all the passages in my lungs stayed open to prevent a full on chest infection. That helped a lot so get yourself to the doctor if it doesn't clear.

I also found steam and hot drinks (camomile tea is soothing) helped a bit.
