I'm currently. 17 weeks pg and my boobs seem to have exploded in the past 2 week, I've gone from a 32 E to a 34 G since I got my BFP and my lower back is killing me!!

I know that a nice soak in a hot bath will help until the paracetamol kicks in

However, all the advice I've been given says to avoid hot baths but when I was PG with my first (7 yrs ago now, hence why I barely remember sweet FA!!) I was told that a hot bath would help my back pain!!

Am I getting this all wrong?? If I can't have a bath is there any thing else I can do (my DD has nabbed off with my hot water bottle and now I can't find it so that's out of the question too Sad)

I'm mning from a nice rather warm bath at the moment and I'm 35wks, I have spd and wouldn't be able to manage without a bath every evening as it's the only time I don't hurt. I think the advice is that you shouldn't have too hot a bath but nice and warm is fine.

DairyNips · 06/04/2012 22:07

Yeah, quite warm is fine, just not really hot. Something to do with blood flow going to skin and away from placenta.

I'm 31wks and have plenty bathsSmile

Thank you to you both!! I don't know what I would do without the bath! Bloody SIL scared me earlier mentioning it!!

Shall be jumping in the bath in the morning!!

lindsell I like your style!!

I'm 36 weeks and have a bath in the evening most days, to help with hip/tailbone/back/feet pain. Not too hot though!

PinkPepper · 06/04/2012 22:50

I have a bath almost nightly, swear I can feel every joint/bone/whatnot relax. I have them fairly hot because I've not found any research to suggest that it's a problem as long as I'm ok. Not in there long normally

signet2012 · 06/04/2012 22:56

I was told the reason is because it can make you faint more easily.

I tend to have quite hot baths but dont fill the bath as full so I get the heat where I need it (lower back) and not on the bump. Not sure it makes any difference but makes me feel a bit less worried!

MadameChinLegs · 06/04/2012 22:58

I think the main issue with hot baths is the effect they have on you, not the baby. So, when I was pg, I still had hot baths (just do not see the point in a lukewarm one) but would take a cooled bottle of water to drink while in it, and make sure the windows and doors were open to let the steam out of the room. I usually stayed in until the water started to cool a little, which meant I wasn;t lightheaded when I stood up.

Towards the end, I also made sure only to have a bath when DH was home incase I couldn't get out.

PinkPepper · 07/04/2012 00:09

yeah my baths sound the same as madamechinlegs. I'm only 28 weeks but already would rather DP at home to fetch me another drink in case I felt weird or anything. I can't be doing with 'warm' I cried in early pregnancy because our boiler wasn't heating up properly :)

startail · 07/04/2012 00:30

I only do hot baths so that's another rule I managed to "forget".

peeriebear · 07/04/2012 00:39

I'm a hot bather. As long as I don't feel hot myself, ie uncomfortable or sweating or going bright pink, then I consider it okay. Can't be doing with warm here either, always got my foot on the hot tap topping up!

KatAndKit · 07/04/2012 06:14

Unless you have your bath so hot that you routinely pass out or emerge dripping with sweat/requiring a trip to A&E for skin damage, you are fine to have a nice warm bath however you like it.

This is another one of those things that started off as sensible advice (avoid overheating yourself in hot tubs as it could raise your core body temperature) and the power of ridiculous non-medical information via the internet has turned it into a situation where pregnant women are now worried about having a bath. However the people telling you that you can't have a bath probably also believe that you can't eat pineapple or raspberries as they will also kill the baby.

Florin · 07/04/2012 07:17

I was told as long as it doesn't turn you into a lobster you will be fine. Dh and I always talk to each other when I. The bath anyway so he is also there to supervise getting in and out. Now I am 29 weeks I am finding it harder each day to get out on my own.

sasslejaney84 · 07/04/2012 09:54

Thank you all for your advice! I have now had my nice warm bath without the guilt!!

KatandKit my gran told me to avoid everything with raspberries while I was PG, luckily, I had been reading a thread on pinapple and raspberrys on here that I could show her and prove it was an old wives tale!!
