Ok,so im now 24 weeks pregnant and time to switch to the maternity wear. I have been looking all over for clothing and cannot believe that DENIM SKIRTS are everywhere!!! What is going on!!!!! Do these designers really think that being pregnant means you shoukd don this type of attire!! Not only are these horrid things about but if you look at Maternity dresses the majority are so short!! my god i give up!!!

Haha, so true! Those and capped sleeve tshirts with horrible old washing up water coloured patterns! I was actually really looking forward to having a bump to dress and know exactly what I want - you know, nice things that fit rather than tent ffs - but that doesn't seem to exist! :(

sparklekitty · 05/04/2012 12:52

I've already jumped into the world of maternity denim (15 weeks!) and I was shocked to find denim hot pants in the maternity range! If you've got the confidence when you're pregnant good on you but the thought of putting a pair on horrified me :)

I have seen a rather beautiful maxi dress on the mama and papas website that would be fab if we have a hot summer. Some of their stuff seems nice, fitted tshirts and vest tops with jeans. I definitely don't want to end up looking mumsy iykwim

FoeufFighter · 05/04/2012 13:23

Denim hotpants fair enough wtf?! but what the heck is wrong with wearing a denim skirt?
I do normally (with leggings and converse and a t-shirt) so why shouldn't I just because I am pregnant?

Boggler · 05/04/2012 13:29

I rather like my maternity denim skirt Wink

RubyLovesMayMay · 05/04/2012 13:33

I wore a denim skirt yesterday (37 wks) not even a maternity one either

Whats the problem excatly?

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 05/04/2012 13:38

ASOS has been my saviour!

Hermionewastherealhero · 05/04/2012 13:41

I was thinking the same about denim skirts- hundreds of a line knee length denim skirts!

mrswee · 05/04/2012 13:48

I lived in my denim skirt last pregnancy, it was a wee bit longer than your average denim skirt and was knee length. I'm hoping to find another similar one to live in this time round!

not sure about the hot pants though, I did see a really cool pair of pink jeans in gap but that really will depend on how big my arse gets... it was massive that last time. Eating less cakes this time though!!

FoeufFighter · 05/04/2012 14:33

Matalan have a maternity denim skirt

Missgiraffe1 · 05/04/2012 15:47

Have to join in the defence of the denim skirt. Don't see anything wrong with them at all. I'm almost 36 weeks and wear one regularly (with tights and boots, and nice fitted top/tshirt plus cardi etc).
And I have a 15.5yo DD aka my fashion consultant. If there was anything wrong/embarrassing with what I was wearing, she would NOT be slow in telling me!! I suspect I know what her reaction to hot pants would be right enough Shock Blush Shock

VeronicaSpeedwell · 05/04/2012 15:56

I bought one in Gap without being particularly smitten with it, but it has been v. useful. It fits the bill for mat wear in my book, in that you can wear it lots in various different ways.

KatAndKit · 05/04/2012 15:57

I agree about dresses being too short. I have struggled to find maternity dresses that are actually knee length. However, i think that's true about dresses in general in high street shops and if I'd forked out for Boden maternity dresses I wouldn't have had the same problem.

LordyLady · 05/04/2012 15:59

Urgh JUJUBUG, I agree. I'm very sad about giving up my wardrobe of vintage dresses and lovely skirts...but I'll back in to them with a bit of perseverance next summer Wink. Denim skirts make me look like Kat Slater and totally agree about the short maternity dresses. I have a wedding to go to this month and have almost given up trying to find something pretty with a bit of dignity. Yes we don't have to look like a sack of spuds but seriously, I'm 35 AND preggers, I do not want to flash my flabby thighs! sigh......maxi dress it is then Angry

xlatia · 05/04/2012 16:10

i bouhgt my first denim skirt ever when i was pregnant and like it so much that i'm still wearing it now (DS is 5 months old). it's about time i get a non-maternity one i reckon...

Chunkychicken · 05/04/2012 16:12

Have you tried Verbaudet? Don't recall seeing only maxi dresses or denim skirts there... I bought a lovely dress, grey, empire line, lowish round neck with loose sleeves from there in the sale (before I was pg, it was such a good offer Blush ) and had another look the other day & thought they had a reasonable range!

Missgiraffe1 · 05/04/2012 16:31

LordyLady I suggest booking an appointment with a personal shopper at Debenhams for a wedding outfit. I did it for a dress for my MILs wedding next week. It's free and you don't have the stress of wandering about, sweating, with numerous dresses hanging over an aching arm - and you never have to leave the dressing room! I will be 37 weeks at my MILs wedding. I got a nice maxi dress (not a maternity dress, just from normal range) but the underskirt is short, so you see a bit of leg beneath the sheer fabric of the full length skirt. I would never have picked it up myself, as I would have assumed it would make me look like once of those russian dolls - the biggest one! But it is very flattering and makes me look like I have a waist Grin I love the personal shopper Smile

Purplecatti · 05/04/2012 18:16

Hehehehehe I've been running out of maternity sections of clothes shops. Tooooooo scary.
I've learnt to sew and will be making most of my stuff from cheap material from the market. I have some nice patterns for 70s shirts (love long pointed collars) and a 50s skirt. Although the 50s patterns are weird, because fabric wasn't stretchy back then they made a cut out in the skirt for the bump and you had to wear a horrid big long smock thing over the top. I will be doing without the smock obviously and making a stretchy top instead.
Looking at the clothes now and the clothes from back then I realise how much things have come on. What were they thinking in the 50s?
My Mum said it was as bad in the 80s and lived in hippy caftans from her peace and love days in India and a pair of dungarees which she just let out a button at a time.
Agree with you on the denim skirts. They are naaaaasty. Hopefully I'll at least keep my skinny legs so I will probably show them off to prove I am not fat, but pregnant.

littlemissnormal · 05/04/2012 18:21

LOVING my maxi dresses at the mo, especially as I'm 35 weeks and wearing my non-maternity ones.

Only prob I have with them is thigh chaffage!! Have to wear leggings underneath Wink

SleepyFergus · 05/04/2012 20:21

Erm, I'm 29 weeks and wear a denim maternity skirt from Boden. Nowt nasty with it. I wear it with tights, a fitted top and cardi too. I still have decent legs so make the most of that. Had lots of compliments on it and wil be able ro make good money on it on eBay afterwards

Hotpants mind you - don't think so!!

BikeRunSki · 05/04/2012 20:32

I lived in my Jojo denim skirt last pg. Bought it at ten weeks and wore it pretty much constantly until DD was about 2 months old. Sold it on eBay when DH had his hours cut just before Christmas and I miss it. DD is nearly 6 months old and I can't find a non maternity denim skirt that I love half as much.

thefurryone · 05/04/2012 20:32

OP I'm of the probably quite unpopular view that no one over 30 (or even 25) should wear a short denim skirt when they're not pregnant, nevermind with a bump! I put this down to working in a university full of young women between 18-22 who all seem to wear them constantly so to me they just look wrong on anyone older.

Last time I was pregnant it was winter so I just layered, this time I'm going for long vests and baggy t-shirts and I just have to hope it doesn't get too hot for jeans that often, which as I live in the land that summer forgot should be ok.

WantAnOrange · 05/04/2012 20:54

Even worse, I went shopping for maternity trousers and loads of them were skinny the fit! WTF?! They obviously have extra room for bump but did no-one mention to the designers that my ankles could swell to the size of Mars?!

I can't do skinny fit when I'm not pregnant!

LordyLady · 05/04/2012 21:07

missgiraffe1 that is a BRILLIANT idea! Thank you so much, I think this might save my sanity. Will get myself to Debs this weekend!

JUJUBUG · 08/04/2012 14:22

Ladies the verdict has made!! burn those short denim skirts!! they are a no no whilst pregnant unless you want to look like Kat Slater!! x

Speak for yourself. I'm wearing mine today and I certainly don't look like Cat Slater.
