What's hospital food like now?

its six years since I had dd and I remember hospital food as being pleasant but very stodgy and filling - e.g huge portions pizza and chips followed by crumble and custard.

Is it still the same or has it been Jamie Oliverised in some way? (sort of hoping its still the same Grin)

Hideous! After my DD's traumatic birth one of the many things the consultant told me was I had to follow a high fibre diet. The hospital gave me their healthy option: rice krispies, sugary tea, white bread cheese sandwich with no marg or salad.

In the hospital food area was a Costa coffee and an empty area where burger king had been.

Take your own!

Oh and no snacks.

And when I was moved to the recovery ward (having already missed dinner and breakfast) at noon I was told lunch was done so there wasn't anything for me.

They do meals so early too.

It was awful for me too in St George's in London.

I gave birth at 7pm so it was past dinner time and was given nothing, not even toast. Thank God for M&S downstairs.

In the morning you could choose between cornflakes or white 10p sliced bread - but not toast for health and safety reason!! Yuk! Think I still had cereal bars in my bag, which I wasn't allowed to eat during labour because I was induced.

Lunch was all sloppy and disgusting, although I managed a soggy baked potato and some chocolate mousse thingy (not prepared in the hospital, which is why I picked it). I'll always remember my lovely French friend asking at the lunch if the shepherd pie was the pudding! It was impossible to tell as it all looked the same: sloppy and brown.

I'm only giving birth in October this time round but this thread has made me think I should check what the nearest eating facilities are to my new hospital...

Absolutely vile. I was in last week and the food was salty, lukewarm, had a distinct lack of any nutritional value, very few vegetables and weird combinations like sweet and sour pork with mushy peas! Husband had to bring in boxed salads from ASDA at which point one of the midwives pointed out that I shouldn't eat them because of not being able to wash it. I took no notice because I thought the germs were worth the risk of my HB count going down significantly. When I had DS my HB went down 8 points in 3 weeks with such poor diet and then I had to take iron supplements which made me constipated after I gave birth not pleasant and I am not going to make that mistake this time.

Oh I'm glad I asked now. I'll make sure I pack plenty of snacks then, it sounds like a complete lottery too but I'm in the Midlands so worrying now (my food is very important to me) Grin
