Beconase - WWYD?

26w and been given Beconase by GP for nose in attempt to prevent constant drip into throat and another chest infection needing more antibiotics.
Have not taken yet though as have read that it should only be taken in pregnancy if risk to mum outweighs risk to fetus, and I don't think a cough and the snots constitute a risk for me worth jeopardizing my baby's health for.
Anyone else given similar advice? WWYD?

I took beconase in pregnancy for hay fever. No
problems - but needed to get hay fever/asthma under control as latter was a risk for baby. Dr said beconase was the only one OK in pregnancy.

Most drugs will have similar warnings on because they'll be covering themselves.

You could also use a saline spray - they do work and are safe in pregnancy.

I asked the same question as you, and ended up taking the nasal spray. I had read on an American website that tells you risks of drugs in pregnancy (can't remember name but easily found on google) that it was thought to cause genital deformities but that had been ruled out. My son was born with hypospadias and now a part of me will always wonder about that and feel guilty.Sad.
I'm sorry if it alarms you, but I remember having the same dilemma and I would feel guilty not telling you my experience.

Thanks for the replies.
essie where would you get hold of a saline spray?
notinguatemala thank you for providing some balance. Sorry to hear about your son's hypospadias, it must've been a shock to you. Sending you and your son good wishes for future repair?/progress. Try not to feel guilty...its such a painful emotion which generally only makes us feel bad rather than do proactive stuff.
I think I'll chat also with midwife when i see her...she may be able to offer her advice too x

I took it in both pregnancies, because I get hayfever pretty so badly that I can't see through my eyes and can't sleep because of it.
both dc are fine.

Most pharmacies should have a saline spray - think the make is Potters. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Oh, I just took beconase last night! Didn't even think about it.

Was at the Dr this morning with this very issue. The advice was that all manufacturers will say not to use during pregnancy to cover themselves, but there's no evidence for Beconase that it's a problem or would cause issues. I've also been prescribed some Zyrtec o the same grounds.

I couldn't sleep for the itch and was making my nose and throat bleed by scratching at them - for me, it's not good for me or for baby if I'm awake all night and miserable

SoozleQ · 03/04/2012 18:05

Are we talking about the Beconase nasal spray or are there Beconase tablets as well? My GP prescribed the Beconase nasal spray for me during my pregnancy and during breastfeeding for my hayfever and said it was perfectly safe. DD is absolutely fine. :)

I used the nasal spray for the first 3 or 4 months and was told that it is such a small amount into the nasal passages that any effect on the baby would be highly unlikely.

Cheers for all replies, v gratefully received!

I'm also 26 weeks and have been using Beconase nasal spray and simple linctus cough medicine for about 3 weeks for the exact same problem. Post nasal drip is the only issue I'm having at the mo, but it's driving me crazy!! Can't stop coughing!
