I have had these mystery bite/hives for about a week, they seem to keep coming and at first the doctor thought it was hives but because they have kept coming one a night or so, she thinks they might be bites and asked me if I have pets. My husband has had two itchy spots in the whole week but it's been warm so he thinks they are just heat spots.
I have two cats so she thinks it could be fleas. The cats aren't scratching any more than usual so I am not convinced. I have got them treatment just incase and we don't have carpets or fabric sofas.

What I don't understand is that she has given my Lyclear which is the same treatment you get for lice/pubic lice and scabies. Why does that help? cat fleas wouldnt be living on me would they? it's supposed to be 'safe' in pregnancy but it's nasty chemicals and no studies have been done so I'm not keen if it's not required. Has anyone else ever been given lyclear/permethrin when they've been bitten by fleas?

hello mrs. well to start with you could get aflea comb and brush said puss cats, you will be able to see fleas on comb, get some water with a bit of washing up liquid to drop any in - if there are any.... then you know where you stand. I wouldn't use that stuff. No conection here, or make of it what you will, but my sister came up in rash in early pregnancy a while ago and they said she had scabies and had to pain chemical goo all over, my gorgeous neph was born with hair lip and cleft, not that I notice, and there may be no link... but I wouldn't. stop using anything with perfume in, use non bio in wash etc and look after your liver but reducing anything artificial in diet and around you.

Cat fleas don't live on humans, they just bite/feed on them so I don't see the point in treating yourself? Treat the cats with something decent from the vets and treat the house with a good household spray even if you don't have carpets etc, fleas can be resilient little buggers! Actually get someone else to spray the house to be on the safe side. I guess your doctor gave you that treatment in case they aren't flea bites, mites ( especially scabies ) would be harder to get rid of on your cats ( also harder to find on a cat than fleas ) and could be in your bedding so maybe give all that a good hot wash too. I certainly wouldn't be too keen on using permethrin on myself when pregnant, it can be nasty stuff.

thanks for the replies

I haven't so far used the lyclear stuff, I am holding off if I can.
I have had no more bites/hives in the last two nights but DH only treated the cats last night so now I am really unsure it's anything to do with fleas on the pesky cats!
The doctor def put fleas in the computer system when she was doing the prescription for lyclear, though it came up with no matches. I did ask her why I needed it but she was very vague and just said it's safe to use in pregnancy... though I have read a study that said it affected the nervous systems in baby mice so I'm not happy to use it unless I really needed too!!

So it's still a mystery but since I haven't had any more bites/hives then I'll leave it for now. I will get some flea spray for the house just in case and get DH to spray it under the beds and sofas ect. We are in the process of washing all sheets and blankets, wishing this was last week so I could hang it all out in the sun and not the snow!!
