Hello all,

This is half rant, half looking for advise....

I am 9+3 and have been suffering from diarrhoea since 6+3. Sorry if TMI. I mentioned this to my midwife when I saw her at 7+4 and was told that this is a common 1st tri symptom, that it will pass (when!?) and to and keep my fluids up. I have spoken to the pharmasist to see if they can give me anything to help and they have nothing to offer without a note from my GP.

My GP is ridiculous - takes about 3 weeks to get an appointment and even then is usually pretty clueless (told me I was more than likely loosing the baby after some light implantation bleeding - cue a week of worry till a scan showed all was fine).

Other than the obvious discomfort, this is causing my toilet trips to triple, partly for no2s (prob about 4 or 5 times daily - again sorry if tmi), but also the increased no1s from drinking so much to ensure I do not get dehydrated (as well as the increased peeing from being preggers anyway. Sometimes I am going once or twice an hour, and several times througout the night.

I have previously suffered from stress related IBS and I am inclined to think this has just reappeared, but my previous treatment was the same as for regular diarrhoea.....imodium, electrolytes which both have pregnancy warnings on them.

Have any of you got any tips, remedies, advise?

That sounds horrid, sorry you are going through it. Is there a different GP you can see at the practice? someone who might be more sympathetic?

No medical advice (book a GP appointment now in case it doesn't get better) but have you thought about taking dioralyte type replenishment drinks as it'll get to where it's needed and might work better to rehydrate you and might stop you needing to drink so much and hence cut down pee trips?

Other than that, what did you used to have for IBS attacks? Peppermint is supposed to be good, so peppermint tea maybe?

babybunintheoven · 02/04/2012 22:05

I have booked a GP appointment, but I have yet to meet a decent GP at my surgery, but have asked for someone new in hope.

I asked for diaoralyte at the pharmacy, but this has a preggo warning on it saying I needed to consult my GP before taking.
My IBS meds were for when the pain gets bad (deffo can't take them at the mo) and then Imodium and diaoralyte type products, both have preggo warnings.

I with try the peppermint tea to see if this works.

Sure you know lots more about your IBS than me, but I do know the potassium in bananas is good. Restores lost minerals and counteracts some of the effects of diarrhea.

Hope you get it sorted :)

My dad has bizarrely recommended fresh tomato salad with salt to help me retain lost fluids. So it looks like tomorrow I will be dosing up on salty tomatoes, banana and mint tea. We will see....

Hey Bun, My IBS symptoms came flooding back during my 1st Trimester too. I had awful morning sickness from day to night, so I wasn't surprised when my IBS came back.

I tried to eat Bran flakes regularly and like you I constantly supped on water but unfortunately there wasn't much I could do! I did have the rehydration sachets a couple of times which made me feel a little better.

Sorry for limited advice here but wanted you to know that you are not on your own and my symptoms all cleared up at 25 weeks and I feel myself again. Good luck! X

Hey,
Sounds awful, poor you!
I haven't had it as bad as you but i did diarrhea every morning until last week - i'm now 13 weeks so hopefully it should go around the 12 week mark for you too!!

Chunkychicken · 03/04/2012 18:31

I was told when I had norovirus that flat coke (the red one) was almost identical to diaralyte by NHS direct. Now obviously, there is the caffeine issue, but it might be worth trying a little of that until you get the ok from the GP?

Good luck with your GP.

thereistheball · 03/04/2012 20:26

To make Coke flat you can drop a single grain of salt into it.
