Woke up this morning with a rash all over my cheeks feel ok in myself apart from getting starts of a cold.

Went to MIL for lunch, whilst there family friend calls in and immediately says my face looks like slapped cheek.

Never heard of it! So did the worst thing I could do and google.

Taking tomorrow off work to go to GP as also another pregnant girl in my office. Am a tad worried... am I being a bit OTT? anyone else got any experience?

I came in to contact with a child who had slapped cheek a month or so ago. What you'll need to do is get to your GP and he/she will send you for a blood test. Most adults, I was told already have resilience to this. The blood test will take about a week to come back because it has to be cultured in a lab, so not your normal blood test. Please please don't get weighed down with what google says. Easier said than done, because that's what I did and imagined all sorts of horrific things.

For me it turned out that I was fine, so no need to worry.

So....tomorrow, you call, explain about your symptoms and gestation of pregnancy.

Good luck x

Get yourself to gps tomorrow they will do a blood test to see if you are immune to it and weather you have been in recent contact. How far gone are you as my gp said its ok past 20wks but I was 14wks. My blood test only took 3days so may depend on hospitals.

Good luck x

I'm 18 weeks tomorrow. It looks horrible but I feel ok in myself other than a bit of a cold. I'm not going into work on off chance with another girl being pregnant. Will phone GP tomorrow. I should know better than to look at google !! Never been such a worrier until I fell pg!

If it is parvovirus you will be offered extra scans to check your baby's growth and blood supply. Don't google, you'll only see worst case scenarios!

Good luck with your GP x

Out of interest, can you get the slapped cheek rash elsewhere on the body (and not at all on the face?)

A friend of mine put on FB last night that she and her 2 children have come out in a rash, a bit like prickly heat, on their upper bodies, and she has a headache. Someone else suggested SC to her but she says it's probably something they've eaten. They spent the afternoon with a 30w pg friend yesterday and I've suggested that perhaps friend-with-a-rash mention it to our pregnant friend so she can chat to the GP or MW, but she's adamant that as its not on their faces it can't be slapped cheek...

SootySweepandSue · 02/04/2012 11:36

Flisspaps- my DD had it and alongside the red cheeks had a pinprick rash on her tummy and back. I had thought the cheeks were teething but the GP saw the rash and immediately said slapped cheek.

Boggler · 02/04/2012 11:41

Omg I've got terribly red hot cheeks today and didn't think anything about it until I read this post. I'm 19wks and don't know anything about how this might affect things!

Flisspaps · 02/04/2012 11:50

Thanks Sooty. Friend + DC don't have the red cheeks at all. I've left it in her hands and I've told her it's potentially really bloody dangerous to an unborn child, if she's wrong then on her head be it. Glad I didn't meet with them yesterday being pg myself!

SootySweepandSue · 02/04/2012 11:53

It's surprising I got through my 1st pregnancy knowing nothing about it. More awareness is needed on this, especially for women expecting baby %232 as they are probably surrounded by other babies and toddlers!

SootySweepandSue · 02/04/2012 11:53

That would be baby number 2, silly phone.

littlemissnormal · 02/04/2012 13:42

I came into contact with one of DDs classmates who has slapped cheek, not realising how bad it can be.
Mentioned it to my midwife this morning and she said not to worry as most people are immune by my age (31) but took bloods to check to be on the safe side.

Boggler · 02/04/2012 17:05

I've just spoken to my GP and my red cheeks coupled with the sore throat I had last week led him to think that I could well have slapped cheek Sad, so having blood tests to check it out, hopefully they will show I'm immune and just had a sore throat.

signet2012 · 02/04/2012 19:33

I've been to gp and he says only kids get it and I'm too old ? Said probably a virus and take it easy.

I'd phone your mw then, of course adults can get it, what a foolish dr! It's definitely worth getting bloods done to be on the safe side.

signet2012 · 02/04/2012 20:07

I think I will. I'm not normally such worrit ! Next scan not for 2 weeks and don't get any definite movement from baby yet

OP posts:
AmandinePoulain · 02/04/2012 20:09

Hopefully your mw will be more sensible. The scan will hopefully reassure you too Smile

McPhee · 02/04/2012 20:52

I would call your midwife tomorrow and explain everything, including what the dr has said. Tell her you're worried, and really want a definitive answer, eg a blood test. Failing that call your GP surgery and insist. Please.

signet2012 · 02/04/2012 21:20

I'm going to call midwife first thing doctor is usually spot on but him saying that has alarmed me when I know adults can get it !

Have you spoken to your midwife yet?

nearlymumofone · 03/04/2012 21:06

My son had symptoms of this- i told my MW at my 12 week scan while they were doing bloods and they decided to do a blood test for parovirus to rule it out. Unfortunately when I went for my MW appointment at 17 weeks I asked about the results (assuming all was fine and that's why I hadn't heard anything) and they hadn't done the test! So I had the blood test for this last wed and awaiting results now. Would you call MW or GP for results do you think? I'm pretty p*ssed off that they didn't do the bloods for it the first time round despite requesting it.

McPhee · 03/04/2012 21:08

Erm I'm not sure because my gp did mine. Did your midwife take the blood? If so, I'd call her, as I'd presume the results would head back in her direction.

Blimy I'd be fuming.

nearlymumofone · 03/04/2012 21:12

Yes I was. Bloods were taken at the hospital where i go to see MW, so i guess I'll give them a call. Tbh I was so preoccupied with worrying about my NT measurement and downs risk factor that I forgot about this until I went to my MW appointment.
