Arr now.... today I was lucky enough to pick up a hardly used cot from a millionaire, a bit of dowl was broken and my DP can fix it up no problem. I have also been offered a moses basket, cotbed and crib! seriously, it is a tiny baby. It cannot possibly need much. My question is.. can my brand new baby sleep direct into the cot avoiding new mattresses for all the other bits of toot, ie then I will just need to buy a new cot mattress and not moses basket mattress etc, or might it bump it's head? can't think of any other reason....?

It's great that you've received so much stuff. Lucky you!
There is no reason at all that the baby can't just sleep in the cot straight from birth. It won't bump its head because it won't be able to move or roll over for a while.
Some people just think a tiny baby looks a bit lonely in a great big cot. And some people find a moses basket more convenient because it is transportable, can easily go next to your bed etc.

I loved my Moses basket for both previous babies as they could sleep wherever I was.

I've just bought a new mattress for this one for my basket and it was £11 from babies r us, so not expensive.

I would probably take the Moses basket (unless you already have a carrycot, which has very similar functionality) but turn the others down. Whilst a baby can sleep in a cot from birth it's handy to have a bed for them that you can carry round the house. When DS was newborn he slept in his carrycot downstairs for naps and until we went up to bed at night.

If you are worried about heqd bumping just get a cot bumper but is fine to sleep in cot from birth

Your baby can sleep straight in the cot from day dot. However, I had a few items and this is how they were used

Cotbed - in baby's bedroom, up, but yet to be used for more than the odd daytime nap, as baby sleep is our room in a...
Moses Basket - great as could put it literally right next to me and as she got bigger have moved her down to the bottom of the bed, then over to the other side of the room. She is a chunk, but I still managed to get three months use out of it before she moved into a.....
Travel Cot - still wanted her in my room, but too big for the Basket, so we put up the Travel Cot which is spot on for her.

We also had a soft carrycot which inserted into her pram, so she slept in that for all of her daytime naps in the living room until she outgrew it (3 months) so now she has her daytime naps either in the stroller or in her bouncer chair.

We only bought the buggy, the rest were gifted to us.

thank you mums so either really... okay will see what happens. think it has been a long time since I looked after babies and they used to sleep on changing mats for a towel on the floor where I baby sat and I do like that idea for some odd tribal reason! so will keep my options open!

I think sometimes it depends on your baby. My dd is 7months and has a cotbed set up next to my bed with a side off. She's currently asleep on my chest because she will not allow me to put her down. I had a Moses basket for when she was tiny but again it rarely got used. Daytime naps are on me or in the mei tai.
I think lots and lots of essential baby items are just not necessary. I didn't start with the intention of hardly ever putting her down though.

ha definate yes that's what my sister says... they just don't 'sleep' unless you have them close to you. so see no point in getting too much stuff. sling, carrycot and cot must tick my boxes... 7 months of holding a baby is quite something though come to think of it....

Haha it is quite tough sometimes but then I look at my 3 year old and know it passes so quickly.
