Shouldn't it be moving more by now?

I'm 30 weeks with first baby and just a bit concerned about movements. Last week I felt a couple of proper kicks but since then it's gone a bit quiet in there. I am still feeling movements but they're more like flutters and squirms than kicks. I thought they'd be stronger by now? I spoke to the midwife and she said as long as there were 10 movements a day minimum and no other problems it was ok. I think I'm just panicking a bit, DP is working nights so am sat on my own obsessing. Does anyone else have a lazy baby? Is it a bad sign? Am I right to be worried? Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I'm earlier than you, at 22 weeks, but I am also not feeling a lot of movements, and they are rarely feelable from the outside (very faint). No mention at my 20 week scan of the placenta or baby being in an unusual postion, they seemed happy with everything they looked for.

My DH reminds me that we are both quite quiet inactive sorts who prefer to curl up with a good book than do sports or anything... and thinks baby might be taking after us.

The last couple of days I have felt more flutters and DH has felt them a little too, so I'm hoping that the baby is getting bigger/stronger and more active. But it might just be in a better position for me to feel the movements.

I am overweight, I don't know if/how this might affect how we feel movements.

My mum and older sister assure me that I'll soon be wishing the baby would stop kicking so I can sleep... :)

I was never happy with strong movement with ds, was just the way he was i think.

I would say that as long as it's normal for you (and baby) then don't worry.

Best of luck

Oh Hun say 'thrm' I go MAD if someone calls my baby 'it' lol

I've got a quiet, I agree that as long as it's normal movements for them then it's ok, my little girl has a busy day then one or two where I don't feel her much at all, not even ten times, I'm 37+1 x

Omg bad spelling on my phone u know what I mean!! xx

Depends on the position of your placenta. I had a scan as I was worried about the lack of movements about 28 weeks, the baby was moving all over the place on screen and I couldn't feel a thing. My bubs was either kicking into the placenta or into my back so I couldn't feel anything. I think around 30 weeks it's pretty normal for movements slow down - there's less room for a start, & he/she will be starting to conserve energy for birth. As long as you feel something I wouldn't be too worried. If you are don't hesitate to get in touch with your midwife or hospital. They won't refuse a scan with reduced movements. Mine got me straight it an even though the heartbeat was heard & was strong they still wanted to scan me.
Try laying really still in silence on your back after eating a lolly, sucking on ice, having a cold drink etc that always gets mine moving about.
I'm sure everything is fine xxx

If things are different tell your midwife. They will strap a monitor to your belly and just check the baby's HB is consistently steady. No big deal but worth checking out. My DD stopped moving as much and it was because I had a problem with the placenta. Not dramatic or anything but just meant closer monitoring and I didn't carry beyond 37 weeks. If in doubt, get checked out. At least out your mind at rest.

Thanks guys. There was a bit more movement after I posted and I think I've been having the odd Braxton Hicks so hopefully everything is ok. Have an appointment with the midwife next week, but if I'm worried will ring the labour ward, she told me to do that if I thought there were less than 10 movements a day.
Milly Star - sorry! I'm a veterinary nurse and I hate it when people refer to their pets as 'it', and now I'm doing it! Not used to babies yet!

Take a look here

www.countthekicks.org.uk

If you are concerned call your MW/delivery suite asap, don't wait.

FoofFighter · 24/03/2012 12:54

I'd also disagree with Hayley, it's a myth that baby slows down. If baby slows in movements get advice ASAP.

igggi · 24/03/2012 12:57

Cydonia flutters and squirms still count as movement. I'm not too sure about some of the advice on here, I think it's great if it works out for you but I don't think it's worth the risk if your baby is moving less than normal - it's very easy to get it checked out, they'll either do a scan or heart monitor to put your mind at rest. Movements shouldn't stop as the baby gets bigger either, they just change a bit. I know I'm Ms Paranoid but I couldn't wait a week for a midwife appt if I thought my baby was in any danger.

Cydonia · 24/03/2012 20:19

Thanks, baby been quite active today (phew!) but def keeping a close eye on things, you're right it's not worth taking a risk

:)

Cydonia · 26/03/2012 20:16

Update! Ended up at the hospital today as couldn't stop worrying, movements quiet again yesterday. Thankfully everything was fine! Midwife was lovely and as she was attaching the monitors she said 'did you feel that?' Apparently she saw my belly move and I didn't feel a thing! So baby is probably moving more than I realise and heart rate and tracing was good :) Hopefully my mind will be put at ease for a bit longer now!

Always worth checking out, glad it put your mind at rest.
