Midwife palpating tummy

Hi Ladies,

I'm 32+3 and had my latest midwife appointment yesterday and it was the first time that she has palpated my tummy to see where LO head was. The thing is it was quite sore, not just uncomfortable but like she was using her nails and after a few minutes I asked her if she would stop as I found it painful. She sort of rolled her eyes, made a comment that if I can't handle this then I'll definitely have problems with labour and attempted to keep going....
Needless to say I left the exam. But now I'm a little worried that I have overreacted. I've had problems with the community midwifes here before (like when they tried to get to donate blood whilst I was pregnant!) but as this is all new to me I'm worried I've caused a fuss
without good reason.

Thank you in advance! Again! God
I should change my name to shewhoisconstanlyworried!

She should have short nails I would have thought so you didn't notice, I can't remember it ever being uncomfy being examined.

I wouldn't worry, you are entitled to halt any exam that makes you uncomfortable and the midwife should have stopped when you asked.

I can't stand anyone pushing on my tummy at the moment, it's uncomfortable and hurts. I definitely don't think that means I'll struggle with labour, it just means that that particular thing isn't comfy. Anyway you have pain relief options in labour if you want them.

She sounds a bit off to be honest. Keep smiling, I'm sure you will cope fine. :)

I would make a complaint about her actually - attempting to continue after you asked her to stop is completely unacceptable!

I don't remember it ever being uncomfortable during pregnancy either.

Saying how will you cope in labour is just horrible! Nasty midwife Sad

this is my second preg and had a check up last week and I have to say the mw really hurt me, never had this before, was quite a strange feeling and was sore for a bit after aswell

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2012 20:43

Are you in this country because you can't donate blood if you're pregnant. it's one of the questions that gets You an automatic no along with having unprotected sex with iv drug users or something.

But yes she should have stopped when asked so when you say she attempted to carry on, if she actually carried on then complain.

Catsycat · 20/03/2012 20:59

She sounds horrid - I've no time for health "professionals" like her. Firstly, you asked her to stop and she tried to continue, secondly she made a bitchy, nasty remark. Who does she think she is? I would complain, and ask not to have her again.

PickleSarnie · 20/03/2012 21:02

Are you sure it wasn't cord blood she was trying to get you to donate?

That aside though, to make some comment about you would cope in labour is just rude!

Thank you everyone. I feel so much better knowing that I wasn't just being sensitive.

Funny you should mention that about the cord blood... When MW at booking in appointment tried to persuade me to give blood (there was a blood banking drive across the hall) i had already asked her for information about cord blood banking. She told me how she thought personally it was such a faff and waste of time that she didn't carry any information about it!
