Sprained ankle - any painkillers I can take?

I am 27 weeks and tripped in an uneven road, smashing one knee and bruising and spraining the other leg / ankle. Can I take anything? It hurts and I want to go to work tomorrow. Thanks.

Yes of course you can, why on earth would you think you couldn't?

Paracetamol.

MillyStar · 19/03/2012 13:39

Just paracetamol which are about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike!

I hope it gets better soon

You can definitely take co-codamol as well (paracetamol and codeine)

ellangirl · 19/03/2012 14:25

Although watch the dosages of course as both contain paracetamol...

Unfortunately paracetamol is the only over the counter painkiller (if you can call it that) that they recommend in pregnancy - do not take nurofen or any ibuprofen. If the pain is unbearable I think perhaps a trip to the gp to get co-codamol which is fine to take in pregnancy. I hope you and the bubs are OK.

Paracetamol is a really good painkiller if you take it according to the instructions. It is now used alot in hospitals as an IV painkiller because of it's effectiveness and few side effects.

You can buy cocodamol over the counter but just not in the higher strengths. Pharmacist could put your mind at rest about what's safe.

Alligatorpie · 20/03/2012 04:05

Thanks, I knew I could take paracetemol, but wanted something stronger. I will go to the pharmacist as soon as I can hobble down three flights of stairs!

Don't dismiss plain paracetemol! It is extremely effective if taken regularly throughout the day.
Codeine can cause constipation, which many pregnant women already find as an unpleasant side effect to pregnancy!

Also use part of the RICE protocol, Rest, Ice( be careful to wrap ice pack and only use for short periods of time) and elevation. Keep moving gently though just when you sit down put you feet up.
If you can perhaps pop along to a minor injuries unit as they may be able to give you more specific advice
And come down the stairs on your bottom!!

Have you had it checked to make sure not fractured? Also they'd be able to strap it up properly for you?
