Acid Reflux/Heartburn - natural/homeopathis remedies?

I am currently pregnant with DC3 and have suffered heartburn in my first two pregnancies but from memory it wasn't until after 20 weeks and at its worse in the last trimester.

This time around the acid refulx started almost instantly, I feel constantly like I am going to vomit and I am only 9 weeks. Another 31 weeks when I know it is going to get worse is depressing.

I was prescribed Omezaprole in the last few weeks of my second pregnancy but then DS was born with congenital pneumonia so I am naturally paranoid about taking any medications.

Anyone had experience with natural therapies or homeopathy to treat this?

Milk tend to help as it is alkaline. xx

I don't see that homeopathy would work as it's basically water (and maybe some sugar)

The only thing I found that worked was ASDA own brand heartburn relief - by the bucketload.

I agree with yummymummy milk has helped me, as has manuka honey.

I have good news for you! I had this at 4 weeks pregnant terrible horrific heartburn . Was awful and was the reason I knew I was pregnant with %234 before even doing the test !
Good news is at about 12 weeks it disapeared as quickly as it came and has yet to make a reappearance at 30 weeks- I hope the same happens for you.
As for a cure cider vinegar sometimes helped.......

So you have seen my gavascon stores Flisspaps although at the moment it makes it worse not better????

you lucky thing susiey I had it early on (Nothing to do with the pies and pasties I ate) and now at 34 weeks it is back and really bad at 03:00 in the morning. I actually thought I was dying the other night. But 2 pints of milk (and three trips to the bathroom) later it was better.

xx

yummymummy I've not, although I know Gaviscon didn't touch my heartburn either time and it tastes bloody awful!

BabyLabyrinth · 19/03/2012 11:12

One teaspoon of bicarb mixed with a glass of cold water, downed in one, seems to do the trick for me almost immediately. Be warned, though: it tastes like fish water and makes me burp loads after :o Otherwise you can try chewing a small handful of hazelnuts until they don't taste of much, then swallowing. It's easy to keep a packet in your bag for when you're not at home. I've had heartburn every day and night for months now, so I feel your pain!

I suffer with heartburn normally as I have a hiatus herna but I had to stop the omeprazole when I became pregnant. Gaviscon or Maalox is the best over-the-counter medicine you can get that is safe in pregnancy, and I agree a glass of milk can help neutralise the acid. I also sleep with extra pillows at night as being too flat will make it worse. Avoid caffeine and large meals too close to bedtime - you're best leaving a good period of time after eating before going to bed. And eat small amounts often rather than big portions. I hope it improves for you.

I know this is going to sound super crazy but pouring Gaviscon and the like in the attempt to put the fire out is the opposite of what you need to do.

Acid reflux/heartburn/indigestion isn't from too much stomach acid but rather, too little. Increase your stomach's ability to produce acid, and you will not get so much. Of course, it remains to be seen whether pregnancy acid reflux is just is but researching this has helped me immensely.

I had the most HORRENDOUS acid reflux, then a stomach virus which f*cked my stomach and I was in agony from the burning pain. I had been taking HCL supplements once a day but increased it to every meal and two days later, I am heartburn free!

Basically you keep increasing the amount of tablets (though never past 3, I think) until you feel a warm feeling in your belly. Then you begin to reduce them back down to one until you have trained your body to produce more stomach acid on it's own.

www.modernherbalist.com/betaine.html - have a read, and I hope it helps! It really did with me and I have had non-painful reflux all my life, and during my pregnancy it turned into the most painful burning reflux.

Flisspaps I could not agree more but needs must and all that.

SilverSage · 19/03/2012 15:50

I had terrible heartburn and acid reflux from about 26 weeks, but I went to see my osteopath, and one half hour treatment with him cured it. That was about 3 weeks ago, and I've been completely symptom free ever since, it was like magic! One thing I would say is that if you haven't seen an osteopath before, then it's important to find one that has experience in treating pregnant women.

I feel I just have to share this!
Up till today and reading these posts I have been thinking I have had a very sore throat. I now realise that it is not, and have heartburn! At 16 weeks I had not realised that this could be so, I thought heartburn might be something to consider as a side effect of pregnancy perhaps in about another 10 weeks!
So I am very interested to read what helps you with this, I have symptoms starting after lunch and on/off for the rest of each day.
So - thank you all!
