As you might have guessed I'm about to become a first time mum and my mind is boggled by the different baby gro types things available...short sleeve, long sleeve, with feet, without feet, poppers or not, with legs, without legs....help! My baby is due on June and I'm not sure what I will need.

argh bless you, the ones without arms and legs are usually classed as vests/bodysuits and are usually worn under clothes as babies should wear an extra layer than you, the ones with arms, legs and feet are sleepsuits and can be worn all day for comfort and access for changing nappies, some have built in scratch mitts which save buying them extra, the ones with no feet would require socks which little babies sometimes struggle to keep on, in the early days i would say a vest, sleepsuit and cardigan would be fine hope that helps :)

vests can have long sleeves and i would say it would be a personal preference i have only used the capped sleeves ones :)

If it gets really hot... it might do by July! Then rompers- short sleeve and cropped legged are useful.

The Gro Company room thermometer egg is good as they also tell you what layers are needed for which temperature.

We use long & short sleeve vests.

Both for under clothes depending on weather. Long sleeves vest are also useful for layering underneath t-shirts to make them long arms IYSWIM

My DD currently sleeps in just a long sleeve vest in her sleeping bag as its too hot for sleepsuits too cold for short sleeves.

I would get both types of vests.

I'm not a fan of sleepsuits without feet though so avoid those as I can't be doing with the hassle of baby socks!

You need one of these under one of these. Probably with one of these on top.

agree with what everyone else says, but re temperature, we bought a room thermometer and then realised our baby monitor has one (which tells us remotely what temp it is in his room), so dont bother until you know what monitor you will be using. also, if you buy sheets in john lewis (which i would recommend above any of the crappy ones iv had from mothercare and kiddicare), they come with a little diagram in the packaging telling you what temperature is right/how many layers needed - being a complete geek i cut that out and put it on the wall - never used it mind you!

oh yes, another point, everyones always telling you what to do with a new baby. this goes for temperature as much as anything else. once they have reached about 6 weeks and can regulate their own temperature better, babies, like other people, have their own preferred comfort zone. we have a 'hot' baby who likes to roll around in as little clothing as possible regardless of temperature, and enjoys a swimming pool that most babies tolerate for about 10 minutes, so like everything else, the best thing to do is follow your instincts. YOU know best.

Can I just say, sleepsuits with poppers only at the bottom are a total hassle, and asymmetrical ones with poppers down one leg. Pita. The ones with built in mitts are great. I really like long sleeved vests now, but for the first month or so dd wore a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and cardi day and night.

RealLifeIsForWimps · 18/03/2012 12:09

Dont buy anything that has back poppers. Just don't do it.

My fave sleepsuits were M&S and Mothercare. Mothercare have built in scratch mitts. However, as others have said, might well be too warm for those by July, especially if you also swaddle.

DS was a summer baby and lived in the cap sleeved bodysuits (no legs) and a nappy.
