Yes, you're being a bit mental. It's going to be lonnnnnng 9 months if you stress over everything that passes your lips. And it'll be a hungry 9 months without any lunch!!

MissCoffeeNWine · 18/03/2012 08:27

Have you ever had listeria before?

I think the risk of getting listeria is about equal to the risk you took walking to the shop. Think about it, you might have been struck by lightning!

surfmama · 18/03/2012 09:41

thank you pickle and misscoffee. thought so but once i get going i cant stop. i read that prepacked sarnies are quite a high risk but maybe that'd be the deli meaty type. anyhow will stop fretting, thanks for sorting me out!

Don't worry surfmama.. know it's so easy to though.
I have eaten prawn sandwiches obliviously and been horrified with myself afterwards when I've realised. Not suggesting it's clever, but I've been ok so far:) Think the food hygiene standards are pretty stringent nowadays (we hope!)

OTTMummA · 18/03/2012 10:11

I had steak with hm blue cheese sauce and greens last night, it was blarrrdy lovely to!
I was a bit mental around christmas time as i love cheese, and i went cold turkey on it < never, ever again> and then read online how very unlikely it was that it would hurt my baby, so have indulged every now and then.

OTTMummA · 18/03/2012 10:13

sorry, forgot to add, if anything, salad in premade sandwhiches are more likely to carry harmful bacteria from the soil, especially if they haven't been washed properly.

KatAndKit · 18/03/2012 10:27

What is wrong with prawn sandwiches? Prawns are ok to eat in pregnancy. So are sandwiches.
Blue cheese in a cooked sauce is fine to have on your steak. There are very few cheeses you can't eat (brie, camembert) and even those are fine cooked.

Look at the NHS pregnancy website. There is very very little you need to avoid. Even sushi is ok!

ahhhhhpushit · 18/03/2012 10:38

Well statistically you are ffaaaaaar more likely to get listeria from a shop sandwich or bagged salad than from soft cheese. Which is why none of these silly food rules make any sense and also why I will be eating exactly what I want :)

And nothing wrong with prawn sandwiches at all (even according to the "rules"!!)

applecrumple · 18/03/2012 12:36

I was panicking a bit over the whole prepacked sandwhich thing, but since I've been craving m&s wafer thin ham sandwhiches, I've been indulging every day!

SarryB · 18/03/2012 12:40

I'm going to make an egg sandwich right now.

applecrumple · 18/03/2012 13:53

I've just made cheese scones!

OTTMummA · 18/03/2012 14:37

Mmmmm, scones :-)

SecondTimeLucky · 18/03/2012 15:07

ahhpushit - I made up my own food rules based on evidence I could find - no dodgy takeaways, no festering buffet food and no bagged salad. Soft cheese a plenty!

madaboutmadmen · 18/03/2012 15:18

Anyone eating eggs with a runny yolk? I love a runny egg and miss it so much....

SecondTimeLucky · 18/03/2012 15:37

I did in both pregnancies. Lion marked British eggs are vaccinated here. A far greater risk is uncooked eggs in pre-prepared foods.

PickleSarnie · 18/03/2012 15:42

I've been eating runny eggs aplenty. And its a physical impossibility to make a cake without licking the bowl so have had totally raw egg too.

madaboutmadmen · 18/03/2012 15:42

Thanks SecondTimeLucky, that's made my day!

madaboutmadmen · 18/03/2012 15:44

xpost. thanks Picklesarnie

PoppyS34wantsgoatscheese · 18/03/2012 17:17

I've been eating runny eggs, lion marked fresh ones in date.. :) I've also been eating shop bought sandwiches for lunch, so I hope it's ok!

Is bagged salad ok as long as it's washed?

Joygirl78 · 18/03/2012 17:41

A packaged sandwich is far less risky than going to s deli where everything is sitting around on a counter as the hygiene can't be guaranteed. But really, don't sweat it.

KatAndKit · 18/03/2012 17:57

I've been eating runny eggs all the way along. I buy lion stamped ones as I would do even if I wasn't pregnant. No point having a fried egg with a hard yolk. Might as well not bother. And eggs are good for you after all.

GavisconJunkie · 18/03/2012 19:26

He'll, I'm on dc2 (39 weeks) I had runny egg, bagged, unwashed salad, a glass of Shiraz, & a medium rare steak - all yesterday!

My dr laughed in my face when I said I was worried as I'd eaten some Stilton before I knew I was pregnant with dd1. He said something about just making sure I didn't lick too many cat's bums or take 'street drugs' at which he creased up (apparently I don't look the type!).

Most things really are fine. Mercury levels are no joke, so the fish to avoid list is important. If you've got a delicate tum when you're not pg then careful is sensible. Otherwise, munch away.

Sugar is a bigger risk than listeria, gestational diabetes is no joke.

surfmama · 18/03/2012 21:51

gaviscon did you read my chocolate craving post, it's like you can read my mind. od'd on choc and felt like a bag of shite this morning! so that overtook the egg sarny panic!

and after reading this i want a runny egg and a prawn sarny at the same time...oooooooo thanks everyone. panic over. although not eating runny eggs as they are our own chickens and i have no idea if they are salmonella free, guess so as we make mayo with them normally..never been ill. (but not whilst preggers before you freak out!)

Pootle78 · 18/03/2012 22:54

I don't remember eating eggs first time I was pg and now ds gets a rash if he eats scrambled egg, omelette but is ok with egg in food, pancakes and cake. This time I am eating egg in every connotation to make sure number 2 doesn't have any allergies!!!

GavisconJunkie · 19/03/2012 07:09

Surfmama I should poi t out that I regularly do od on chocolate! I tried to curb it by buying green & blacks so it would be too expensive to gobble. Hmm, 1 bar of butterscotch gone in about 3 minutes I think!

I was terrible in first pg, survived on dry toast for ages I was so scared!
