Crib or Moses????

Hiya totally confused about how and where a baby sleeps, I bought a cot bed but apparently he won't sleep in it for 6 months at least so now I'm back to square 1.
What's best a crib or Moses basket?

I'm thinking I could bring the Moses basket downstairs when bubba sleeps in the day - but a crib would probably last longer. do u actually need both?

I plan to sort out all the bedding tomorrow & am not sure where to start - don't even get me started on choosing from a million blankets!

This is seriously complicated stuff!

I Went for a basket so I can have my daughter downstairs with me then I can take her up to bed when I go, seems a bit daft to move her from a basket to a crib then in the bedroom when I can just pop the basket on the stand, like you say they go to cots quite quickly.

Cribs are very pretty tho ;)

If the cot bed fits in your room then no reason why he can't use it. I must say though I have a moses basket for the first time with dc3 at the moment and I do love it.

justhayley you don't have to have a Moses basket or a crib if you don't want to your baby can sleep in its cot from day one if you want, you just have to remember to put their feet at the bottom so it's looks a bit empty that's all. People often have a crib or Moses basket as they are small enough to fit next to parents bed where as most people cannot fit a full sized cot in. It's just a matter of what you prefer so don't worry.

On ds we bought a beautiful Moses basket and thought he'd use it for a good 6 months - it looked big enough. But within 6 weeks he was waking himself by banging his arms on the sides, we moved him to his big cot and he was happy as larry and we never looked back.

I had a Moses basket which I bought for a tenner from eBay and just got a new mattress for it. V handy to move around house. Wen from there to a cot at 3 months

I didn't have both - just a Moses basket then a cotbed. We don't have room in our room for a cot so when DD started wriggling & rocking the basket on the stand at 9ish weeks, I moved her into her cotbed in her own room, guidance be damned. I did put her in there in the basket to begin with, then used a 'barrier/dam' thing I bought from Mothercare so there was less room for her to wriggle around in & could keep her feet to foot iyswim.

It's up to you really. A crib will last longer as you say, but will take up more room. A Moses basket can be taken with you into a different room or house easily, so very handy, but I felt risky when they move around if its on a stand in case it rocks. If you have a cotbed, you may not want the expense of buying a crib too, but it depends how cosy your own room is...

It really is difficult trying to do it all 'right'/to guidance, so just go with your gut. Good luck.

you can use a cot bed from birth if you want - you can divide the cot to make it smaller (if you wanted) with something like this. I had a crib for my two to start with and never had a moses basket. My lo's slept in the reclined buggy (dd) or in the carrycot bit of the pram (ds) when they were downstairs.

ahhhhhpushit · 17/03/2012 19:28

We had a crib in our room and a basket downstairs. He moved into his cot in his own room at about 3 months.

He had outgrown the basket by 3m.

Thanks all. I'm thinking a crib might be the way to go for longevity. my mum does actually have a plain basket that I could have downstairs - (didn't tell my DP about is as I wanted one of the super pretty ones with a hood) but if it's not going to be used for too long I should probably save some money. Also good point about using the carrycot part of the pram - my pram has that so really a Moses basket is kinda a waste. I wish I had loads and loads of spare cash to buy it all lol

both of mine were out of their crib (which was a family heirloom, we didn't buy it...) by 10 weeks. DD2 was a giant, so that was fair enough, but DD1 was a normal size and still outgrew it, so not sure how much longevity you'll get out of a crib...

of course if your cotbed won't fit in your bedroom then a crib is probably the way to go.

re bedding, you want a baby sleeping bag, such as grobag - they're quite expensive, but are often available cheaper in TK Maxx and you can get them/sell them on on e-bay of course.

My 10 weeker is still in her
Moses basket with plenty of room too. She is nearly 12lb I am dreading the day when she doesn't fit it anymore as I will have to get out of bed to feed her. She never poos in the night now so night feeds are a lovely calm experience for us both.
I only brought her basket downstairs for the first month as after that you are out and about more and they just sleep in car seat, baby chair , playmat, or mostly on you!

madaboutmadmen · 18/03/2012 15:30

i had a Moses basket, DS grew out of it by the time he was 11/12 weeks. He went to sleep in his own room on his cotbed and took to it well, slept a lot more soundly.

This worked for us, but you could think about buying a small cot if space is an issue in your room. Could get one 2nd hand with new mattress or a new for about £40 on kiddicare or ikea and other places probably. you could always sell it later too.

startail · 18/03/2012 16:20

Which ever you can beg, borrow or steal.

Baby won't fit in it for long and is likely to spend far more time sleeping in your arms on the sofa, in their car seat or co sleeping than they do in their crib.

If you do want them to use it at all, putting them down on a warm sheet helps a lot.
We waved the hair drier at ours, but other people swear by putting it over a radiator or simply snuggling up with it while you feed so it smells of mummy too.

(DDs would sometimes sleep in their posh rocking crib, but I suspect that's only because I borrowed it!)

We had both and a cot bed, all either ebay or relative hand ons. Like other PPs, the moses basket was handy to have downstairs for the first few weeks but DS did start banging his hands on the sides and waking himself up by about 8 weeks (he wasn't that big!) so we started putting him in the crib in our room. Must admit as a hand-on I really didn't like the moses basket frilliness in my clean lined IKEA front room so wasn't desperately sad to move it to the loft!

He was probably about 4mo when he started doing the same in the crib (think xylophone down the bars at the sides, fab at 3am) so we moved him into the cotbed in his own room (not room in ours). Didn't stop me spending the whole of the next 2 months paranoid about moving him to his own room early - still he's 10mo and I'm still paranoid when I can't hear anything ("what? he's asleep? how very unusual!").
