I have been reading about belly binding which helps the bump go down quicker while also supporting your internal organs. They apparently do this in Japan after pregnancy, and really works. Having the bump supported also stops gravity taking effect.

Breastfeeding really helps. I had my second baby six weeks ago and tummy almost flat again. I have also been using my fitness pal and trying to stick to 1700 calories a day, but still a few pounds to go before pre pregnancy clothes fit nicely.

GinPalace · 17/03/2012 15:33

It takes 9 months to stretch out so can take the same to fully return - that said you get a big difference in a month or two depending on bf / exercise opportunity etc. :)

scarlettsmummy2 · 17/03/2012 15:33

Should say with first baby it was prob five or six months without dieting or exercising, but it also really depends how damaged the stomach muscles are.

kiki22 · 17/03/2012 23:32

DS is 6 weeks old and just about in my pre pregnancy skinny jeans my tummy is very soft but i've done no excercise bar walking due to problems with my stitches.

PropertyNightmare · 17/03/2012 23:51

Agree that it takes bloody ages. I my case 9 months on, 9 months to cone off. But, I did gain a fair bit of weight each time which won't have helped.

Joygirl78 · 18/03/2012 04:31

Dieting while breast feeding is not a good idea. Eat healthy, but don't restrict calories. Bf needs many calories which is why it makes you naturally lose weight faster. So if you stuff yourself with cake, this may not work as well, but if you don't eat properly your body will quickly get exhausted and depleted and you are in danger of compromising your milk supply. Just allow nature a little longer. If you bf for 6 months, not necessarily exclusively, and eat healthy but properly with some moderate execercise (ie lots of walking) the weight will come off well

kickingking · 18/03/2012 04:38

For me, first time around it was about six weeks. Hoping for the same this time!

Fraktal · 18/03/2012 07:29

About 3 days. I was in pre-pregnancy jeans as I came out the maternity unit but that was a VB and I didn't put on much weight throughout. I also stomach massage, BFed, etc. Every woman is different so I'm not saying that to be smug, just to illustrate the point that some women ping back and others don't. Next pregnancy I may not.

Dexy83 · 18/03/2012 07:34

Don't wear anything tight round your tummy if you've had a section. Your scar will sweat and this can cause infection.

bushymcbush · 18/03/2012 07:49

Everyone is different. My 1 week old dd2 is in SCBU at the moment so I'm constantly surrounded by women who have given birth recently. The one in the cot next to mine had her baby 2 weeks ago and looks totally flat to me.

Most of us (including me) still look somewhat pregnant.

When I was discharged from the post natal ward the other day and my partner was helping me down in the lift with all my luggage, a woman nodded to my bump and said "False alarm love?" Grin. I think she assumed so much because I didn't have a baby with me. She was Blush when I explained!

chezchaos · 18/03/2012 07:50

Mine was relatively flat after 4 weeks.

Chunkychicken · 18/03/2012 07:57

I think mine was flatter & not big or baggy (like an empty bag) after about a week, but it took me a bit longer to get the all over weight gain off and back into my pre-pg clothes. I think I was back in my normal jeans by about 2 months. I still have a little 'muffin top' of belly which I didn't have before (& DD is nearly 2), but then I haven't ever worked at it or anything, so it'd probably shift if I hit the gym.

Nothing to do with being tall alorsmum. I'm 5'10 but have a massive post partum belly.

crochetcircle · 18/03/2012 20:55

It took about 4.5 months for me to get back to roughly where I was before. I still had a bloodily bit in the middle that wast there before n't you'd have to be me to notice it.

HappyAsEyeAm · 19/03/2012 09:27

It took until I had lost all of the weight that I had gained during my pregnancy for my stomach to go down. Which was 2 years - I was too tuired to take control of my eating and exercise until then. I carried about an extra stone in weight from the time I came home from hospital to 2 years after DD was born.

I don't know if age/build has an impact, but I was 32 having DD, and a short size 10 before I got pg. I have never looked good with extra weight on me due to my height and frame. I sort of look like a barrel if I'm carrying extra weight. DD was nearly 9 lb at birth.

I have friends who snapped back into shape within a few weeks of their birth (and did with subsequent births too). I have other friends who, years on, haven't lost their saggier tummies.

I didn't BF for longer than 6 weeks. One friend exclusively BFed for a year, another exclusively BFed for nearly 3 years. Each of them have said that they ate and ate whilst BFing as they were so hungry all the time. And even though they ate healthy stuff, and certainly didn't overeat and did lots of exercise, they both say that they have much bigger and softer tummies than pre-pregnancy.

Justfeckingdoit · 19/03/2012 09:31

I actually looked more pregnant for about 6 weeks (post EMCS swelling)

9 months in and I'm back (at a squeeze) to most of my pre preg clothes, but I doubt the belly will ever go (and I'm an 8-10)

I suspect you have to give a shit about sit ups ect. And not eat chips for breakfast.

waitingforchristmas · 19/03/2012 09:51

i went straight back to a normal shape after both my sons were born you wouldn't have known i had even had a baby while i was in hospital if it wasn't for the screaming newborn next to me, i had a bit of a floppy stomach for about a week afterwards but i think it depends entirely on your stomach muscles, i know my sister in law who had her baby a month after mine was born still looks pregnant now, i wonder if genes have anything to do with it, you would never know my mum had four kids lol

TinkerMaloo · 20/03/2012 11:35

never! mine never went back to what it was... i carried my first baby huge and it stayed looking pregnant for months afterwards. took me about 2 years to go back to my pre-pregnancy weight but my tummy stayed a bit wrinkled and loose even though i was (very) skinny again.

my solution was to get pregnant again and fill it up! twice! :)

we are all different, thats for sure!

LackingNicknameInspiration · 20/03/2012 12:14

About 6 weeks to get back to pre-preg weight with both of mine, and stop looking pregnant. Although I didn't worry overmuch about it at the time.

Rather annoyingly, though, I have since learned that when I am tired I eat lots (and BF made me hungry too, though still think it was more the tiredness) - so I then proceeded to put about a stone back on with each one Blush as neither of them slept through until around 9 months. Happy to say I spotted the pattern with DD2 though (after someone kindly asked if I was expecting again....) so was able to nip it in the bud before it got too much (and continue BF while at Weightwatchers so I got to eat more Grin).

Now awaiting DC3 (5 days late and rising...) - haven't put on too much this time so hoping it'll go and will then TRY not to put it all back on again - although it came off quite quickly when I went to WW last time, so am planning on enjoying the baby and worrying about the weight later.

One thing I would say though is that I've never been the same shape - I was
always a pear shape and am now a pear with a mum tum - planning on this being my last though so will bring in a bit of exercise too and see if that helps.

capecath · 20/03/2012 13:09

Agree with the previous comment about not being the same shape again! My hips seemed to widen and never got smaller again. Wearing old clothes again within a few weeks, but never seemed to manage to shake off those last 2kgs! Admittedly I was exercising intensively a lot more before baby (despite the physical nature of being a full time mom now)...
