14 weeks pregnant and need thyroid biopsy - terrified

When I was a few weeks pregnant, I had a flu-like virus which resulted in my thyroid noticeably swelling in one side at the base of my neck. I want to GP who ordered blood tests and ultrasound. The blood tests came back pretty much clear with thyroid function slightly raised in line with viral thyroiditis - I really thought I didn't have much to worry about when my ultrasound came round last week... However, the radiologist obviously saw something he didn't like and I have now been referred for an urgent biopsy which will hopefully happen next week. He said the reason for the urgency was because of me being 14 weeks pregnant and 'time was of the essence' and because I had a singular nodule within the thyroid that was very large.

Has anyone else had any experience of this and what was the outcome? I know pregnancy can do mad things to the thyroid and it is surely too much of a coincidence that it first swelled up when I was newly pregnant but obviously the urgency and the gravity of having to have a biopsy has left me a little shaken up! Just looking for some reassurance that this has happened to people before...thanks in advance!

Sorry fermin I have no experience of this but hope everything's ok when you get your scan x

I had a thyroid biopsy 18 months ago (although not pregnant at the time). A large nodule came up in my neck and within a week I was having an ultrasound. With nodules over a certain size they take a biopsy, mine was done on the same time as the ultrasound. Please don't be scared of the biopsy - I didn't even feel a scratch.

Please make sure that they sort out your thyroid levels are OK. It is very important during pregnancy. You may need to see an Endocronologist.

Thank you Bogger and Flower - your experience is really reassuring. I am starting to think that maybe it is our hospital's standard practice to send for a biopsy after an ultrasound has found a nodule and mine is only urgent because of pregnancy etc. I'm not under specialist consultant care yet so I think I will insist I am referred to endocrinologist just to make sure levels are ok for the pregnancy and to discuss my extensive family history with thyroid problems which no one has seemed interested in yet! Thanks again x
