please please please take these. unfortunatly for me i threw every single one i took up. i got them changed but they had no effect. i dont want to scare you here but i had a massive pph 1l+ and ended up with 4 blood transfusions. my level dropped tp 6.2 and the acceptable is 11. in pregnany it dropped to 8.5 but avaraged around 9.3. At my booking it was 10.3 and that was already considered slightly anemic

Please take them, it is so important and you have enough time to get your levels up. It takes time to build the levels up but you need to go into labour with your levels as high as you can, I was diagnosed really late and although I had a gorgeous healthy boy I had a transfusion and spent a week in hospital as I didn't react well to the new blood. Drink orange juice when you take them. Leave off the tea for an hour before and after and eat lots of red meat and grEen leafy veg!!

please please take them.

I wasn't diagnosed with low iron until the very end of my pg, and I ended up rather severely anaemic afterwards.

they do make your poo black, but it's okay.

Even better, take Floradix - it's a liquid iron supplement, so gets into your blood much more quickly. It tastes gross so put it in some apple or orange juice. Wishing you a healthy and succesful pregnancy/labour x

Do you know what your Hb level is? Definately take them. Your baby will be fine, they take all the iron they need. I am on ferrous fumarate, have been for 2 weeks, am having the baby on Monday so hoping they have worked a bit (apparently it can take a month). I havent had any side effects, apart from black poo, which is totally normal. I always take them on an empty stomach, with orange juice which ensures the best absorption. Dont take them with tea,,coffee, milk or antacids.

Floradix/spatone does not contain enough iron to correct iron deficiency anaemia.

Yes, as nenehoo says there's a liquid iron alternative that you can get with your prescription via Boots - DW can't swallow tablets (as she very rarely takes tehm) and she had it with both her pregnancies and lived to tell the tale. She said it wasn't too bad at all!

firstdayofspring is absolutely right. I was going to say exactly the same thing.

Take them. You need them. Fainting at 8 months is not recommended. Haemorrhaging not pleasant either.

Ask your mw about constipation remedies.

madaboutmadmen · 17/03/2012 18:59

Prune juice for constipation

Take any iron supplement with vitamin c either as a tablet or a glass of oj. Vitamin c increases your bodies rate of absorption. Hth I got prescribed them at 28 weeks also.
