When do I have to ditch the underwire?

I've assumed it's from when I find out I'm pregnant . I'm now 11 weeks and my boobs aren't big enough for my nursing bras so I've been wearing supportive vests but it's not really enough and I'd love to go back to my underwire if I'm not jeopardising breastfeeding by doing so.

When I went for a bra fitting they said wires were fine as long as the bra was the right fit. I'm still in wires at 28 weeks, but my boobs are ever expanding and they're starting to get a bit uncomfy again, so am
Thinking about going for non-wired now - dreading it though!

NoodieRoodie · 14/03/2012 20:00

I never did!

The important thing is to make sure that you're wearing the correct size bra, so get measured regularly. I ended up buying cheapy bras from Asda as I didn't want to be spending loads on bras that I wouldn't be wearing for a long time.

MissPollysTrolleyed · 14/03/2012 20:04

Ooh, that's great news. I had terrible blocked ducts last time I was breastfeeding and had put it down to wearing underwire early in pregnancy but it sounds like that might just be my usual mother guilt complex at play!

Leia are brilliant for fitting you properly & underwires are fine as long as you're regularly fitted

ninjasquirrel · 14/03/2012 21:00

I bought a couple of non-underwired bras at 5 or 6 months and quite honestly wanted to cry at how unsexy and dangly-boobed I felt, so switched back to cheap underwired so I could discard and change sizes as I grew. Mothercare t-shirt non-underwired nursing bras or Hot Milk were fine though, so maybe there are maternity bras out there which aren't crap.

Catsycat · 14/03/2012 21:08

Hot Milk bras are gorgeous, and compared to other ones I tried, they give a fairly nice shape (not like an underwire, but not making me look like my MIL). I'm a FF/G, and stayed in my normal underwires until about 10 weeks, when they got a bit uncomfortable.

DaisyAndConfused · 14/03/2012 21:38

I never ditched underwires - I burst into tears in the M&S changing room when I went to try some on, they looked awful.

The bra fitting lady told me to get a grip, I was going to look like the side of a house soon, what did it matter what my boobs looked like as long as they "worked".

I've repressed that memory until now...

DaisyAndConfused · 14/03/2012 21:39

Tried some non-underwired bras on, I meant to say, and I breast fed fine.

Catsycat · 14/03/2012 21:44

Daisy, I had the "M&S experience" too. "Matronly" is the word that springs to mind. The lady actually asked me if my breasts were leaking and whether I had breast pads before she would let me try on the bras. Nice. And they measured my size all wrong too, as did Mothercare. Hideous bras, and no matching knickers (though under the circumstances that was probably a blessing). The best fitting I ever had was in House of Fraser in Cheltenham - the lady did it pretty much by eye, and picked out the best fitting, most comfortable bras I've ever had, all with a back size 2 sizes smaller than other people had measured with their tapes. That woman is a genius!

harbingerofdoom · 14/03/2012 21:44

I never ditched.

But after..............was another matter.

Don't listen to all the rubbish you're told-go with what you feel comfy in.

Loislane78 · 14/03/2012 22:04

I didn't even realise under-wires were up for discussion? Assumed just get one that fits (no mean feat in itself!) and boobs, I mean jobs a good 'un!

Someone said they can cause blocked milk later on, is that true or just generally ill fitting bras causing the prob?

Will not be visiting M&S from these comments! I always find Bravissimo helpful even if just for a fitting or get something in the sale ;)

Murtette · 14/03/2012 22:43

I was in non-wired bras throughout my first pregnancy and hated them as they were just so ugly. I'm now 31 weeks and still in wired bras and feel so much better about myself. I think I'll stay in these for another few weeks and then go & get measured for nursing bras.
When I was nursing DD, I had one wired nursing bra & two non-wired ones and did find that I got blocked ducts more often when I was wearing the wired one. It only took a bit of massage to unblock them though - it was never anything serious.

ShitThatsALotOfMoney · 14/03/2012 23:39

I wore underwires all the way through both times, and breastfed with no problems both times too. I think you just have to regularly check they are fitting ok, you only need to change if they are uncomfortable.

McBaby · 15/03/2012 07:22

Unserwolired do uncomfortable at 7 weeks, but I did start as a 32f and now 36g. Have some a couple of non underwired bras from mothercare and bravissimo which are supportive and l

McBaby · 15/03/2012 07:22

Look nice!

NoGoodAtHousework · 15/03/2012 08:01

I switched to non wired around 20 wks I think when wired became uncomfortable. They look a bi shit but you can get padded and 'pretty ones' so they do t all look like grandma bras.

I found them so uncomfortable I was actually scared to go back to wired a couple of months after I had him!

babybouncer · 15/03/2012 08:05

I'm also a Bravissimo girl and when I told one of my friends I was pregnant she gave me a huge lecture about the need to wear non-underwired bra. I was so panicked I went straight to my midwife who said the same as the rest of the posters - a correctly fitting bra is more important than a non-underwired bra . The fitters at Bravissimo said the same thing - underwired is fine so long as it is comfortable.

And M&S should be avoided at all cost - one fitter actually refused to fit my SIL for an underwired bra while she was pregnant!

tipp2chicago · 15/03/2012 08:09

I'm 27 weeks and went for a fitting last Saturday in my local (excellent but scary) bra shop. Started off this pregnancy at 34GG and am now 36GG. Remember that cup size is proportional too so a GG in a 36 is actually larger than on a 34.

Underwire is fine as long as it is properly fitted by someone who knows what they are doing. I love my underwired but they all fit correctly.

RockChick1984 · 15/03/2012 08:17

I just got padded bras and pulled the underwire out! Fit me really well and boobs looked a fab shape

rhihaf · 16/03/2012 17:28

I had a very similar M&S experience - bloody awful! And yes, MATRONLY is the word! They all seem to be older ladies who think they know better than you about what's right... I ended up in a disgusting 36F nursing bra, which made me look fat but flat chested but I was too polite to tell her to naff off, and it cost me about 25 quid!

Then I went into John Lewis (not to get fitted, just to see what they had) and ended up being 'advised' by a very young, slim and annoyingly glamorous lady, who, when I took my own bra off to try on new ones, shouted out 'Oh my god, you are BIG, aren't you? No offence.' She put be into a 34K which was even worse-looking than the M&S bra, but shows how way off the annoying know-all granny was in there.

So now I'm pretty desperate about finding a nice, comfy bra that actually supports my massive boobs without strapping them downwards and outwards.... is blocked mild ducts the only reason for not wearing normal, underwired bras during pregnancy? Am getting desperate!

FoxyRoxy · 16/03/2012 23:39

My last pregnancy I wore non wired bras from mothercare or somewhere and I felt so unsexy and most of my clothes looked awful.

Not doing that again! I was a 30G pre pregnancy, I'm in a 32G now (14 weeks) and will go for another fitting in a week or so. I will stay in wired bras unless there's a medical reason for me not to.

RealLifeIsForWimps · 17/03/2012 04:40

You can wear wires throughout pregnancy. You just need to make sure they fit properly and that the wires aren't cutting into your boob flesh. This can get pricey if your boobs keep growing, but I just bought two (one neutral, one black) and hand washed them in the shower so I didn't need more

You can buy underwires nurisng bras as well, although I just used the hot milk ones

Purplecatti · 17/03/2012 09:38

NO WAY am I giving up underwires. I can be forced to give up smoking and the gin but I am not wearing horrid saggy making granny bras. Yick. As if being pregnant isn't bad enough.
I'm a size 8-10 with an FF chest normally.
The weird thing is I've gone up a cup size which I was expecting but down a back size, I'm at 28G which is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get. The only underwear I feel happy in are T shirt bras. I'm off to scour Debenhams later as Bravissimo is too expensive and the attitude of the matrons in M&S get my hackles up. Especially now as I can't have a calming fag when I'm wound up.
I really hope they don't get bigger. I'm at 12 weeks and no bump as yet and I'm beginning to look like a porn star.

applecrumple · 17/03/2012 17:11

Purplecatti, Freya stock underwired bras in a 28g - I used to be a 28ff so sympathise!

susiegrapevine · 17/03/2012 18:09

I wore non underwired bra's got most of mine from debenhams. They seem to have a good range of pretty nursing and maternity bras last time I looked and I got measured there by a lovely lady who did it by eye. Have also heard lots of storys about m & s measuring people wrongly! Need to go again and get measured for this pregnancy but finding a moment to go without a toddler in tow is hard. Am wearing my nursing bras from last pregnancy at the mo! Naughty I know! But my normal bras were way too tight and uncomfy! Going to debenhams again.
