so after my last thread we picked out Jake Paul.

we've been 'test driving it' I don't mind Jake but am rapidly going off of it.

DH likes

Jake
Joshua
Jack

the last two I really hate - big style. I'd like a Harvey or something else but not too sure what.

any ideas? the middle name of Paul will def be sticking.

also how to convince DH there's other names out there than those 3?? he seems to have decided on Jake and that's final! lol.

I like Harrison which is another one in DS's nursery - he gets called Harry and H mainly.

purpleturtle · 31/01/2006 16:43

Finlay

munz · 31/01/2006 16:54

lol, koby like toby! I like toby but he had a dog called that - isn't it funny the associations u have??

not too sure on dominic not too bad actually.

if we went with Jake Paul the initals would be JPM (which is one letter shy of JPS fags )

didn't think about the ageing thing actually with alfie - could imagion a teenage jake but don't think I could imagion a elderly man of that. I think DH is happy to let DS 'blend' in and not get picked on cos of his name iycwim.

ooh actually D's were out cos the initals are DPM - which is the amry colours and as DH is army he thought it would look sad! lol - as if that matters!

The thing about trendy names is they may be cute on a toddler, but not so suitable for older men!I chose a boys name by thinking of him walking into a pub meeting his mates....

chocolateshoes · 31/01/2006 17:48

our 3 possibles were:

Archie
Alfie
Louie
Stan

went with Archie

choosing names is such fun but sooooo difficult isn't it

Good luck!

cece · 31/01/2006 18:10

Sonny

crazydazy · 31/01/2006 20:35

James is a name that would suit throughout his whole life, can be shortened to Jay too or Jamie if he liked that.

beasmum · 31/01/2006 21:20

munz, how about christening him Jacob and he can be Jake for short? Jake is a shortening for Jacob anyway, not a name in it's own right. You can call him Jacob and your DH Jake!

I like Louis (as in the french Louis, not pronounced Lewis!)

Milliways · 31/01/2006 21:39

I too like Jacob & James

& Joel

Munz, please go for the full name! I can't stand shortenings. Of course Alfie is not a great name for an adult - that's because it is a baby nickname! Alfred on the other hand is fine, same for Jake/Jacob (I think Jacob is lovely). We thought would this name suit if our ds/dd turned out to be a high court judge, or a footballer, butch or feminine etc etc. Like is it fair to call your daughter Grace if there is a chance that she might be clumsy (I was very unco-ordinated as a kid, although it is a lovely name). I think that flexibility is really important. Hey lockets - we were all set for Ezra (until ds2 turned out to be dd!) - but then I liked quoting from Ezra Pound when I was a teenager I used to record delayed discharges from hospital, and picked up lots of lovely old fashioned names from the lists of 70/80 year old patients - many of which have come back into fashion - I think that lots of people call their children after their grandparents, so you get cycles of popularity (our dd is named after two of her great grannies). Sorry, not very helpful! I do think Barnaby is very nice - goes well with Paul. I think that rhythm wise a longer name goes well with a short one, but it probably depends a lot on your surname too.

crazydazy · 31/01/2006 22:36

Barnaby Bear - I must stop watching Cbeebies

munz · 01/02/2006 09:52

thanks for the names, keep em coming althou i'm thinking either Harvey or Caleb. not sure if I can see a 20 year old being called Caleb (well prob cal) I don't mind shortened names DH diesn't like them thou - althou either way I guess it will be shortened in school - Jake would probably be J wouldn't it??

our surname is only 5 letters as well. not mentioned anything yet - jsut keep saying we'll see when he's born, but DH know's i'm going off Jake. Had to really put my foot down with the other two he likes!he's thinks cos we've told ppl we chose it we have to sick to it where as I don't care! lol.

Tactics ...

barter using his middle name

ie ........ Paul is so so so old fashioned, but not in the - so old fashioned that it will come back into fashion at some point, just plain dated old fashioned.

If names didn't evolve we would all have biblical names. Kids just don't get called Paul any more, or Sylvia or Vivian, or Kevin -all from the same era. - why give it to them as a middle name ?

when he insists, in return YOU choose the first name

munz · 01/02/2006 11:05

I don't mind paul actually esp as it's both our dad's names (luckily they have the same one to save arguements! lol)

think the post labour i've just pushed this baby out so I get to choose eyes will be in order!

Munz

Whether you like Paul or not doesn't matter, its a bartering tool to get the first name of your choice ...

  • or am I just more devious than most
