Aspirin to avoid miscarriage

MissB2 · 11/03/2012 10:42

Hi all,

I have recently had two miscarriages at an early stage but am happily pregnant again. I have read about baby aspirin helping blood clotting to avoid miscarriage and was also advised by my acupuncturist to take it. The doctors offered me no help or advise really. I am taking it and keeping my fingers crossed. As anyone else had it and gone on to have a baby after miscarriage?

Hi, there is contradictory evidence on this. I've had 3 MCs but am now 38+4. I did thrombophilia screening and an abnormality was picked up when I was pregnant. I took 150 mg of aspirin until 34 weeks, so double dose baby aspirin.

If you decide to take it without a diagnosis, stop taking it if you start spotting. It can cause problems with implantation of the placenta if you don't have a clotting issue and the spotting could be a sign of that (or could be something else) but just to be safe.

I have been on 75mg baby aspirin this pregnancy but then I had been diagnosed with APS after previous miscarriages. If you don't have a diagnosis of blood clotting issues then the doctors are unlikely to recommend it.

Haven't had a miscarriage, but I was told to take aspirin during pregnancy (by consultant) as I had previously had Pre-eclampsia. I was told it keeps the blood thin, as they think that the blood being thicker prevents it travelling through to the baby.

I wouldn't take it on advice from anyone except a dr, tbh. You could ask a consultants advice

Sorry for your losses & congratulations.

Thanks for the response. The trouble is I know I wont get any tests because I have not had three in a row so they're not interested in investigating.
I am 5 weeks now so not sure if it has helped or if I am just lucky.
Not sure whether to stop or not now. Hopefully I will see the doctor this week.

I personally have heard that the 75mg dose will not do any harm and have heard of some women being prescribed it after recurrent mc even though their tests didn't show anything.

MarieFromStMoritz · 11/03/2012 13:16

Yes, it helps to take it. However, stop immediately if you have any bleeding, as it could make it worse. Also, get a prescription for Progesterone, if you can.

Ok thank you ladies. Maybe one every other day until I see the doc.
I have back ache and mild cramps now which i know are normal but getting paranoid - eeek

I took it after a mc without it being prescribed as it had worked for a friend. I always suffer with spotting in early pregnancy and did with the DS when I was taking and continued to take it until my 13 week scan and went on to have a healthy DS.

My friend was also prescribed it after she had a stillborn at 29 weeks, her consultant told her to take it for her entire pregnancy and she went on to have a healthy DS.

I would keep taking it, it now seems very commonly prescribed, my pharmacist new the dosage of baby aspirin and I was told it is such a low does that it can't do any harm and that many people live on it.

I've had 3 mc's without a reason being found, this time I was prescribed 75mg daily aspirin just in case, I wouldn't take without a doctor advising as there can be complications.

Midgetm · 11/03/2012 21:40

I had had several miscarriages and no referrals so took 75mg of aspirin until 4 months on the advice of a friend and delivered a healthy but small DD. Went on to have many more MC's and Now have had investigations. Now have had the clotting issue confirmed and I am on 150mg. So far so good and the bean seems to be sticking. I am convinced that it is aspirin that made the difference. With DD, I then went on to get pre eclampsia and my dd was low birth weight. I often wondered if I had carried on taking it untill third trimester if I could have avoided these issues. Like somone else said I am not sure if 75mg would do any real damage for a short period, it didn't for me.

blonderthanred · 11/03/2012 22:02

Interested to read this as a friend who had had fertility treatment was advised to take it and advised me to do the same. However I'm loathe to do that without Dr's say-so. Never been diagnosed with clotting issues or had a mc but have taken nearly a year to conceive. I have low blood pressure and am more than a bit overweight so I did wonder if it would help.

I guess I'll have to add it to my list of questions next time I see a HCP.

MissB2 · 12/03/2012 18:47

It's interesting how different the responses are. Tried to get a doc pp today but as usual it's a nightmare. I cannot get one until next week and I have to ring back at 8.30 in the morning. Grrrrrrrrrrrr Wish I could just get say so.
I have really bad circulation. Not sure if it's linked but thought it could be a clotting issue.

At my IVF clinic every woman is put on one 75mg aspirin a day and two clexane injections per day as a preventative measure after embryo transfer. I am currently pregnant naturally (after failed IVFs) and they told me to take the one 75mg aspirin. I would take it if you want and just tell your doctor that's what you're doing when you see him or her. It's pretty accepted these days. Make sure you take it after food.

FYI I am also on one 400mg progesterone pessary per day.

helterskelter99 · 13/03/2012 10:26

It depends on who you talk to. Once you have a BFP it probably doesn't hinder but you shouldn't take it on the 2ww without doctors advice as there is some research that indicates it can hinder implantation.
I have had IVF at 2 places, 1 puts you on low dose asprin from embryo transfer 1 waited until you got a bfp.
Best advice would be from a specialist mc consultant or the epu at a push, your GP may not have relevant information (mine didn't after my mc's)
Good luck x

Voidka · 13/03/2012 10:29

I took both asprin and clexane injections with both my pregnancies after MC.

farfallarocks · 13/03/2012 10:41

I have also read that it can hinder inplantation. Docs are also split on the issue. St mary's for example absolutely disagree with taking it unless an issue has been discovered and their research suggests it does not improve outcomes for women with no clotting issues.

Other hospitals treat emprically, that is to say, if no problems are found they will ask you to give aspirin a go (and progesterone for example, which is the the case at St George's Tooting) whereas St Mary's don;t believe in supplementary progesterone.

it's a minefield and there is so much we still don;t know about it all.
Personally if I were you and everything was going well I would be loath to change anything I was doing and would carry on!

Midgetm · 13/03/2012 20:13

Would agree don't take it ever without a BFP. I am under Prof regan and she said even with clotting issue you don't take it till you get a BFP.

MissB2 · 13/03/2012 20:41

It certainly is interesting. I saw my acupuncture lady today who used to be a nurse and she seems to think I should carry on. She is also recommended by St Mary's. I managed to get a doc app though on Friday so will ask then. All I know is that I didn't take it and had 2 miscarriages and now I have everything seems fine so far and much stronger symptoms. 5+1 today so keeping everything crossed.
