Toddler might have slapped cheek, how worried should I be? (21 weeks pg today)

And my mom can't remember if I've ever had it and would be immune. Even if I am immune, the baby isn't apparently, and it can be dangerous if picked up before 20 weeks. The infectious period is 4-20 days before the rash appears.

DS (2.6) looked absolutely fine when I picked him up at childminder's. I almost didn't send him today because he's been a bit off for the last few days, as have I. He seemed warm this morning so he had paracetamol before he went.

Just after we got home, his whole right cheek suddenly got very red, like a very bad windburn. The other side is a bit red but not as bad. Childminder lives across the street, so she popped over and said it definitely wasn't like that earlier.

His ears are red and feel a bit warm too, so I'm concerned he's got an ear infection as well.

I have a call in to out of hours GP. Been reading up a bit and scaring myself, does anyone have any experience with this?

I thought the issue was that even if I am immune, the baby doesn't get the immunity from me? And because the infection (if it is that) was before 20 weeks, there was a danger of a certain kind of anemia?

or maybe I'm reading this wrong here

My son had it when I was pregnant and they tested my stored blood and said that I had immunity. (My Mum didn't remember me having it!)The way that I understood it was that it was only potentially dangerous to the baby if I caught it while pregnant. However, I may be wrong as thinking back a few years now.

You do need to get to your gp and get yr immunity checked. If you are immune you and baby are in clear. Most people are, but certainly not all - I am not, as I found out when I was exposed in pregnancy. But even then chances are overwhelmingly in your favour, especially as you are now at 21 weeks - seem to recall real danger period is 16-17 weeks. It's an anxious time though -sympathies!

Thanks everyone, spoke to the nurse at the GP out of hours. I will call the midwife tomorrow morning about getting my immunity checked in case it is slapped cheek. DS seems ok for the moment and was so tired I didn't want to drag him to out of hours to get his ears checked. Will get a GP appointment in the morning for him.

The rash on his cheeks seems to have faded some but is still there, and everything the nurse described about the stage before the rash comes fits perfectly.

I suppose I probably do have immunity, but would like to make sure. My mom was a school nurse and saw loads of kids with slapped cheek, so perhaps they all blend together even when it comes to your own. The nurse said they check for immunity if you are exposed any time before 23 weeks.

Slapped cheek (parvo virus) is going round our school I'm 19 weeks! My mum also dnt no if I had it! I'm scared my kids will get it : (( I rang doc she sed she will check my previous blood samples and she never got back to me! So annoying !!

Just an update: Took DS to the GP this morning and she said it looked like it could be slapped cheek, so I've had the blood test for the virus itself and the antibodies. Results should take a week. GP was a bit Hmm about testing me because I am 21 weeks, but I pointed out that DS's infectious period would have been before I was 20 weeks and then she agreed. She was looking at the same patient.co.uk page I had!

The nurse at the out of hours said they check if you're up to 23 weeks, I think to cover your dates possibly being off and the infectious period being potentially up to 3 weeks before the rash comes, so I don't feel too hysterical for having insisted on the test.

Sarahmarie, your doc may have checked but just not gotten in touch because you have the immunity already. Apparently most adults do, but I just want to be absolutely sure.
