V painful leg/hip -sciatic nerve?

For the last couple of weeks, I have had really bad hip pain which has now become generalised around the bum/leg area. It gets worse with exercise, and makes me limp like a 90 year old and feel perpetually grouchy.

I am 33 weeks preg. Does this sound like a sciatic nerve? Is there anything I/the doctors can do? I haven't been yet because I assumed they would say "well, you are pregnant..." in the usual way, though last week I nearly went in and begged for a crutch...

I have a 2 year old DD so have to be active. Any suggestions? Is it worth going to the dr.?

I am 19 weeks pregnant and have been having bad pains down the front of one leg and numbness - I have to hop about if I stand on it for too long which looks strange in the queue at Tescos! I asked the midwife and she said it sounds like sciatica, and that if it gets worse to see the doc as they can refer you for physio. I think there are also exercises you can google which help. Hope your leg gets better!

Sounds like pelvic girdle pain.I had it when I was pregnant. Also walked like I has 90. I did go to the doctor and also saw an obstetric physio (referred by midwife) for the last 3 months of the pregnancy which did help. Only cure for it is giving birth though.
Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks! I can't really be bothered with the doctor - when I went for bad back they said "hmm, yes, it's because you're pregnant. It's likely to get worse but we can't refer you to a physio, because you're pregnant", which seemed quite rubbish to me. I will mention it to the midwife when I see her.

I'm 10 weeks & also have a slipped disc so I have really bad sciatic pain in my left leg - walking is really painful. I've had countless physio sessions on the nhs over the last 14 years & (since they don't seem to be working) have gone private. If you can afford it, I would recommend it as you will get someone who has the time and resources to care. I've been given exercises that focus on my pelvic floor and core muscles - I lie on my back and pull in my pelvic floor (this engages your core muscles), hold for 10 counts, release and repeat 10 times. I agree with you Flowerface - doctors are a bit rubbish when it comes to back pain (whether you're pregnant or not), but please don't just suffer - back pain is miserable (I should know!). Good luck

I'm 22 wks and I've had a painful hip/ bum cheek with numbness and tingling down my right leg. MW said you can self refer to physio in pg, so I did. Waited a month for my appointment which was two days ago and it REALLY helped. Try calling the physio dept of your hospital and see what they say. Good luck! Smile

The GP can and should refer you to a physio. Please don't just carry on with the pain, it could get much worse and also it does not disappear once you have the baby! Sorry to be doom and gloom, but this happened to me in my second preg, it was sacroiliac pain, sort of at the back of the pelvis iyswim? Google pelvic pain. It was worse going up stairs and I had a very bad waddle. Try not to lift your toddler, easier said than done, but this will aggravate. Personally, in this pregnancy (am now 38wks) I have rested as much as possible as I had 2 bad scares at 23 and 29 wks and had a stick!! Physio was good though, they can give you exercises and crutches if really bad. Things they say to try and avoid are pushing supermarker trolley pushchair, hoover, lifting heavy things. Keep your legs together whenever you move, get out of bed, car etc. I really hope you can get this sorted as it can get totally disabling. Oh, and it doesnt sound like sciatica, this is more the shooting numbing pain the a previous poster described. Good luck!
