(Sort of) good news and (sort of) bad news about emkanas scan

following on from my other thread, an update for anyone who's interested:

I finally talked to the sonographer this morning, and she explained to me that I wasn't going to be rescanned because of the femur length - as that was "only" one week behind expected dates and the result of my blood test was normal, they weren't worrying about that one.

The reason they are rescanning is because of the ventricles in the brain - the measurements for those were the upper side of normal - 9 and 10 mm when the upper limit of normal is 10 mm. They are going to check at the next scan how their size will have developed. If they are too large that can be a sign of hydrocephalus, apparently. So that would be very worrying, but I'm holding on to the fact that the measurements were normal, just large normal.

So I do feel calmer now, and am taking the view that I will wait and see what happens next week.

Thank you for all messages of support! They really helped a lot!!!!

They were "normal" do they're just being overly cautious.

No, it won't stop you worrying about it

starlover · 30/01/2006 14:27

hi emkana... wasn't on the original thread but i did read some of it and just wanted to wish you luck for next week!
i am sure plenty of people have said this already, but the measurements they take can be inaccurate and that in itself is FAR more likely than anything being wrong with the baby....

hope all goes well

HellKat · 30/01/2006 14:27

At least it's a start in the right direction hun! Fingers crossed for the next hurdle.
Thinking of you x

emkana, I had large ventricles with DS2 and the consultant then said what a silly billy the songograoher had been to refer me at all given that DS2 had a big head. So I worried masses pointlessly, am guessing it's the same for you,

pepperpots · 30/01/2006 14:29

"upper end of normal" stil means normal i know you wont relax till baby is in your arms btu good luck and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy

emkana · 30/01/2006 14:29

To be fair to the sonographer she checked with the consultant and he advised to rescan in 10 days. But what gives me hope is that both me and my two dd's have very large heads.

sonographers seem to lack people skills, or even the awareness that they're dealing with people.

Late in my pregnancy with DS1, we had a scan to verify he was breech. The sonographer said, "you have polyhydramnios". What does that mean? You'll have to talk to an obstetrician. Is it serious? You'll have to talk to an obstetrician.

Polyhydramnios means too much amniotic fluid. It can mean the baby has no brain, or some other serious defect. Or it can mean, hey, you have more amniotic fluid than most people.

He was fine.

I'm sure your baby will be too.

It's sad how the worry overshadows the joy of being pregnant, isn't it? And you just don't know if the worry is justified or not.

They said at the scan that it's a boy, which is a big thing for me really because I have two dd's and was expecting to have another one, but I haven't thought about that at all the last few days because I've been worrying so much.

Emkana, that sounds really positive. Upper normal reads normal for big head. Glad you are feeling calmer

good luck for next week - as everyone says, 'normal' is the important word here.... hope the week doesn't drag too much

ScummyMummy · 30/01/2006 18:39

Sounds much more positive, em. Keep that chin up.

MarsOnLife · 30/01/2006 18:41

try not too worry too much. As has been said before sonographers need people skills, and normal is normal.

I had one scan with the DTs where the sonographer got into a panic because she couldn't see where the two sacs joined. She thought that they were have joined and some other nonsense. Fortunately having had as many as I have I kinda took it with a pinch of salt. I figured my consultant would tell me if there was anything to worry about.

I've had teams on standby for the enormous babies I was due to give birth to (the singletons I mean). Only the consultant believed me when I told her that I just carried big.

Anyway.... enough of me.... will be praying for you, but am really sure that all is okay.

beansprout · 30/01/2006 18:42

That sounds ok. Thanks for letting us know, hope you are feeling better

emkana · 30/01/2006 20:38

Thanks all. Have googled a bit more and feel quite heartened (can you say that?) by it all - but too much detail to go into now.

Hope my optimism will not be misguided!!!!!!!!!
