Am nearly 34 Weeks pregnant and leaking some kind of fluids down below. Not a huge amount but enough to be noticeable and has been going on several days now.

Called labour ward when it first happened and they said sounds like an infection so get doc to swab asap. If the test results are clear I need to go labour ward asap for monitoRing as could be leaking amniotic fluid.

This was Wed, went docs straight away. Urine test done there and then showed protein and white blood cells which are signs off infection. Second urine sample and vaginal swab was sent off. Doc said results will be back Thurs am.

It's now Monday and still no results. Have phoned the surgery 3 times now and they say there not back. The receptionist answered "how long is a piece of string" when I asked when they would be back.

This isn't good enough is it. I know it isn't there fault but I explained the urgency and they don't really seem to care.

Best case senerio is I have an infection but the midwife says without antibiotics it could spread to baby and / or cause early labour.

Worst case senerio is my waters are leaking and baby is at risk of infection and I need monitoring / inducing.

Baby is measuring very small so the longer she stays put the better.

It's now been 6 days since this all became apparent and I am so worried about the risk my baby has and the fact I am basically bring left hanging on with no treatment offered.

The doctor don't seem to understand the importance of this, the receptionist is rude and unhelpful and the midwife is putting the fear of God into me saying they need the results but can't help me get them.

What the hell do I do, feel very abandoned by them all.

If I were you I would go to the labour ward. Surely they can do the tests there?

loopydoo · 05/03/2012 20:33

I would also go straight to the antenatal ward. They can monitor/swab you again.

In fact, I'd call the oncall midwife or labour ward tonight and ask if you can go in to be monitored/checked.

Northernlurker · 05/03/2012 20:34

Ring labour ward and ask to come in for monitoring because you are concerned. Explain swabs were taken but you know no more and you are seriously concerned. Say 'I know my baby is small for dates and I have concerns for her wellbeing'. Insist on an hour on the monitor because then at the very least you will know baby is doing ok.

Yes you need the swabs back but what you need right now, tonight is assurance that baby is doing ok and you can get that from labour ward. When all is well with that we can deal with the failings of the surgery.

countrybump · 05/03/2012 20:35

I'd go to your labour ward. They can do the tests there and get results quicker, and also monitor you and baby for a bit.

SleepingWithGhosts · 05/03/2012 20:45

Labour ward said they send the tests to the same place so no point re doing them. Baby is moving fine and no labour signs but I feel so ill.

Have spoke to labour ward again this evening who just say there is nothing to be done until the results are back.

Can't help wonder why they don't just give me antibiotics as a precaution, surely if the risk in both senerios is infection that's the best thing to do?

Have they refused to admit you for an hour's monitoring? Did you say you felt ill?

SleepingWithGhosts · 05/03/2012 20:47

Will CTG monitoring show anything? I thought it just checked baby heart rate? It wouldn't give any more information as to an infection / waters leaking would it?

Sorry this is going to be quick, but didn't want to read and run...

Culture and sensitivity takes at least 48 hours, regardless of who it is done by and where. So, assuming that your GP sent the speci on wednesday, the lab would have received / started the process either late weds or early thurs. They may not have been processed by the lab until today and so your GP surgery should receive either late today or tomorrow morning. I understand your worry, and agree that it isn't good enough that the receptionist didn't explain the time frame to you, but you haven't had an unacceptable wait for swab / urine results.

I think your options are: either go to labour ward tonight to be monitored / speculum exam or wait until tomorrow morning and call the GP again. Ask if they can chase the results if they haven't been received yet. If you go to labour ward, make sure you have a pad in so they can see how much fluid you are losing. Just to warn you though, if baby is moving well, you don't have a fever and everything else other than the fluid loss is normal then they may not invite you in to be monitored... especially with swabs already done. If you don't get anywhere with GP reception tomorrow, call your MW she may chase results for you.

Good luck

Northernlurker · 05/03/2012 20:55

No monitoring won't show anything other than that baby is coping ok now - but I thought that was what you wanted to know? When you say you feel ill what do you mean?

SleepingWithGhosts · 05/03/2012 23:26

Just to update.

Went to labour ward as had more leakage. Fluid was tested and confirmed to be amniotic.

Am staying overnight and have scan in morning to check fluid levels. They are hoping to get me to 37 Weeks.

Will update more tomorrow, phone battery low. Thanks for all advice.

Oh wow good luck thinking of you. Come back and tell us the good news when he/she arrives x

Northernlurker · 06/03/2012 08:06

Glad you've been seen and hope everything goes smoothly now. Good Luck Smile

SleepingWithGhosts · 06/03/2012 16:50

Scan showed that fluid levels are low but not so low as to be a big concern which is a relief.

Had Iv antibiotics today and will have to keep monitoring for signs of infection.

Fingers crossed baby stays put a few more Weeks yet.
