What on earth IS this??

I'm woken up early in the morning by a pain so intense around my ribs and back (at rib level) that I can barely breathe.

This happened for quite some time pre-pregnancy with DS1, and the first time it happened (it was lower down at the time) I thought it was appendicitis or something, but once I'm up and moving around it just disappears. It carried on throughout my pg with DS but interestingly disappeared completely after he was born.

It started again recently and has been getting increasingly worse. My whole body sort of goes into a 'spasm' - I have really itchy legs and it's like my body is trying to stretch it out but out of my control, if that makes any sense at all??! I had forgotten until this morning that the spasm-ing happened at roughly the same time in my pg with DS1. At the time it was quite scary and I wondered if it was Braxton Hicks, but now I'm pretty sure not.

It's SO weird. Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any idea what it could be? I've tried different pillows and sleeping in different ways, trying to make sure I'm really relaxed when I go to sleep, but so far I can't find anything which helps.

I'm sure it isn't this but the itching made me think of obstetric cholestasis. www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/obstetriccholestasis1.shtml - might be worth having a blood test to rule out any liver things?

thanks bearcrumble :) I think I described the leg thing badly - more like restless legs than a need-to-scratch itch. I don't worry too much about it being related to baby, because of it starting initially some time before DS1. But the spasms only happen in the third trimester of pregnancy, which is just plain odd.
