I have the weirdest thing and I'm not sure if it is pregnancy related or not. I am 18 weeks and for the last fortnight or so my tongue has felt like I have burned it on a hot drink or something, but I haven't. It looks fine, just hurts.
The only reference I can find to it anywhere is as a symptom of menopause.
Anyone had anything like this?
Anyone had anything odder? Grin

Me too ! I have strange patches on my tongue too which look like burns. My GP has said its geographic tongue
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_tongue

Oooh, I had this - at the start my tongue was sore / felt burnt and looked fine and then it has got white furry stuff on it (yuck! Blush)

Went to GP and they've given me a totally useless treatment for oral thrush. I had asked a pharmacist before if there was anything I could get over the counter having explained the burnt tongue thing and the best answer I got was 'try rinsing with salt water several times a day', but the GP's seemed to think OT and prescribed Nystan drops.

Now, I'm on my second week (they're supposed to work after a week) and my tongue no longer feels burnt, which is good. But I can't get rid of the white patches. It's really hard to get the stuff to treat your whole tongue as you just have to hold it in your mouth and it's only 1ml of liquid so I can't make it cover my entire tongue iyswim? So if no joy by the end of this bottle I'm going to have to go back again as it seems to only clear up at the front, or the back of my tongue but as one end gets better, the other end gets worse again Confused

Anyway - I would say, worth a trip to the doctor. If you don't have the white patches it might not be OT? But if it is there should be something you could use, and the drops I've had have definitely helped with the burnt feeling.

Incidentally I also had a similar symptom at the end of my pg with DS and I've had it from, say 33-34 weeks this time. Having googled it seems to be something that can be brought on by your immune system being down so maybe that's something to do with it.

Oh Willowshimmer - that picture on wiki looks like my tongue - maybe I have that instead!!!

Might ask the Gp if / when I have to go back.

Did your GP offer any solution / treatment for it? Wikipedia seems a bit vague as to how to acutally get rid of it - should it clear up on its own?

I certainly had a similar thing at the end of my last pg (as I said), but it just seemed to clear up after the birth, I never went to the doctors or had anything for it?

Good grief - we used 1ml of nystan on our new born. You'd think they'd let an adult use more.

Do you have a sore throat or cold? My DP and I had this recently and DP eventually developed laryngitis. Think we're just ridiculously run down and keep catching all the colds that our little angel brings home from nursery. I am so eager for her immune system to kick in and start working better.

FutureNannyOgg · 04/03/2012 18:52

Oh good, I feel less odd now. I don't have any grey bits though. I have really sore bits on the side where my teeth feel really sharp, but the rest is pretty normal looking AFAIK.
I expect I am a bit run down, I have a sore throat and a cough that came on yesterday, and life is all a bit stressful at the moment.

Thrush?
It is more common in pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

Biscuitsandtea · 04/03/2012 18:59

Ooh, thinking about it, mine came on at the same time as I had a cold, and then it got a bit better as the cold went, but never quite cleared up....

froggers1 · 05/03/2012 07:58

Can be a sign of having anaemia....I think being a bit run down can make you have a sore tongue too...

willowshimmer · 05/03/2012 09:14

Biscuitsandtea no remedy offered by the Dr they tried to give me oral thrush treatment but I didnt want that. When it gets very sore I use Corsydll mouthwash which does help. I also have to be careful with acidic foods as they aggrevate it but I do think it is hormonal.
I am hoping it will go away after delivery !

FutureNannyOgg · 05/03/2012 22:11

I doubt it was anaemia, my bloods 6 weeks ago were 13.5, I don't think it would drop that fast. I am going to see the Dr tomorrow I think, I realised that my tongue is slightly swollen (it feels awkward when I speak) and the sharp edges of my molars have started wearing raw patches into the sides, so it's really sore now Sad
