Toys for a newborn

So when responding to another thread it occurred to me that, whilst fairly organised on the nappy/clothing/pram front, my DH and I have practically nothing for our newborn child to play with.

Now, I know that they will spend the majority of their time nursing and sleeping, but I'd like to encourage those early instincts towards independent and co-playing, whilst not overstimulating them.

Whistles and bells are definitely not our thing!

So, a couple of questions:

1.) At what age would a child usually begin to use a playmat (love them!) Any favourite playmats out there? (I'm thinking colourful, engaging, washable and likely to be used for a longer time)
2.) Does anyone have any recommendations for a particularly good, colourful mobile (not sure the ecru style will really intrigue them). I'm more into animals etc rather than gender specific toys.
3.) Are there any activities/toys that a very young child will respond to?

...someone mentioned something about a giraffe once...not sure what that was about.

Thanks!

...I know this may be more appropriate in the parenting section, but I'm a bit scared of being flamed for my naivety, so have decided to stick with the safe, warm hand-holding of the pregnancy section. Hope you don't mind!

Early on:

  1. Playgym but at a reasonable price. DD loved this but by the time she was 5 months she could roll over and get off the mat and did not use it any more. Hence no point spending a lot.
  2. Dangly things that hang from car seat handle
  3. Musical mobile for soothing and helping to establish a bedtime routine.

6 months on:

  1. Fisherprice Jumperoo is ace.
  2. Real stuff: Silicon pastry brush, wooden spoons, remote controls (after a good clean!)
  3. Magazines. She loves to rip them (and will try to eat them)

Hi
not sure if these have been mentioned but the Tiny Love giant playmat is great and we still use ours 20 months on! Sophie the giraffe is a great teething toy but get a sophie saver lead off ebay so it doesn't get lost!! those black and white cloth books with faces in are great and amazon do them for a few quid.

This tiny luv bunny is really good. I have used it since she was tiny. They love pulling at the legs, it can be attached to baby gym or a stroller - brilliant!

Remember in the beginning they are too young for baby gyms - they just need to sleep and feed.

weevil I am proud that I can't spell. Life is also too short to proofread forum posts. This is the same as millions of Brits who are proud that they can't work out change or their payslips.

I have brought 3 lovely toys for my little boys 0 birthday. Heard that strong stripes are good stuff for little ones so got this lovely tiger....

If you are craft minded.....Have also made some lovely toys too out of felted jumpers, easy patterns can be brought quite cheaply from etsy and if you are clearing out winter woolies, boil them up to make great toys with nice textures.

I has an amazing playgym for my little girl, fisher price rainforest one: www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3486937/Trail/searchtext%3EFISHERPRICE+RAINFOREST.htm
lights up and plays tunes and jungle noises, this captivated her for months as she looked around to see where the monkey noises were coming from.
i never bothered with a light show at bed time as i like to put my babies down in the quiet, any bright mobile would be good a got a basic my jungle family one from mothercare,
a couple of lamaze toys, i like this one a lot www.mothercare.com/Lamaze-Flutterbug/dp/B005OS6O58?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_17&nodeId=42764041&sr=1-17&qid=1330804015 my little boy still loves things that vibrate now and hes 13 months!

When you have had the baby, people you don't even really know will give you gifts. It is weird but your neighbours and friends of family will be very excited. wait till that happens before you buy anything. As someone else already said, you don't need much at all, just a soft blanket to lie on.

Once they not newborn anymore (around 12 weeks....?):

  1. Have a fabric/soft book 2)you will get your moneys worth out of a whozzit or Lamaze product.
  2. the giraffe (think she called sophie) she good for teething 4)a treasure basket the best........measuring spoons, pegs, those shiny sheets people wear after marathons (available from £-land in the camping section).

I got a massive bag from freecycle and just washed everything and we were good to go. Save your money for when they go to university!
