I looked into this with Ds2 and when looking at our 12 week scan pics, using the nub theory I said it would be a boy. And he was!

Could be coincidence of course!

Now pg with dc3 and can't wait for 12 week scan!

What's the nub theory?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 02/03/2012 10:03

It says that the baby's genitalia is obviously already formed by 12 weeks but not developed.

Apparently if the dangle but between the legs is over 35 degree angle upwards direction, it's a boy.

Below 35 degree angle, it's a girl.

Have to say I read this over a year ago and I am writing this from memory - so could be wrong about the degrees!

I did. Apparently if the nub runs parallel to the spine it's most likely a girl but if it sits at an angle to the spine it's a boy. Our ds was confirmed at our anomoly scan. Ours was seriously obvious at 12 weeks.

Worded better than mine winnie thanks.

And yes out ds was very obvious at 12 weeks too!

I concluded from our 12 week scan that DD was a girl using this theory. :-)

The nub theory is basically about 'the angle of the dangle'. Between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation both genders have a penis-like protuberance between the legs. They look incredibly similar at this point, except for the angle at which they are pointing. Sometimes there are males and females at this stage which are in the 'grey area', but essentially a boy's 'dangle' is 30 degrees up relative to the backbone and a girl's is below 30 degrees.

In order to be able to have any chance of predicting the gender, the foetus must not be curled up- they need to be lying as flat as possible. Also, it must be side on and apparently, it is better if the foetus is right side up.

If you get your scan at 11 weeks, it can be difficult to tell the difference between the genders. A scan at 12 weeks is around 75% accurate and at 13 weeks it's closer to 95% accurate
