24 weeks, anterior placenta, can't really feel the baby: reassuring words welcomed

Hi
My MIL has been asking me since about week 16 whether I can feel the baby yet (it's my first). I couldn't feel anything at all and, although I knew most first time mums don't feel much for several weeks thereafter, it did worry me a bit.

At my 20 week scan the ultrasonographer told me I have anterior placenta which is cushioning the baby's kicks.

From about 22 weeks I have felt the occasional twinge which I assume must be her, but hardly at all.

I am now 24 weeks and still feel very little. We have a home doppler and so listen to her heartbeat from time to time to reassure ourselves. We can hear what we think are movements. But there seem to be lots of threads from people who feel their babies from very early on and who are being kicked about by now.

I know I am being a bit neurotic but I am beginning to find the absence of feeling anything worrying.

Anyone had experience of an anterior placenta and have any reassuring stories? Gratefully received!

I had anterior placenta at my 20 week scan with ds1, i remember feeling proper kicks around 28-30 weeks, but did feel the odd movement before, but not to the point i would get excited iykwim.
By 32 weeks i could definatley feel him in there! with less room i would get feet and hands poking out at the side of my tummy.
I wouldn't worry, the bigger they get the less room they have, so you will definately get more movement soon.

If you're ever worried about non movement, just contact your MW or head down to the hospital.

I didn't get regular, consistent kicks until after 25 weeks with this one, and it's my 4th!

This is the first with an anterior placenta, which I had predicted as I had not been feeling movements like I had with the other 3 DC! I actually asked the sonographer at my 20 week scan, and she confirmed it!

From about 28 weeks they gained both strength and momentum, and this one has actually been the most active which has been reassuring!

Like the other poster said if at all you are every worried,do get checked out!

I hardly ever felt my babies move! I probably felt Twin1 about five or six times the whole pregnancy and so faintly. Twin2 maybe every two or three days from week 26 and only once on those days. It's an amazing feeling when it does happen but it did make me worry not to know what they were up to. Even during my many scans you could see them cartwheeling away in there but I couldn't feel a thing. Try not to worry.

nothing solid till about 27 weeks this time, i was very panicky because i felt DD at about 18 weeks but placenta was posterior, very active now at 35 weeks :)

Hotpotpie · 01/03/2012 21:44

I was 27-28 weeks before I felt much - Im 33 now and I get booted day and night! you will get there dont worry :)

cerys74 · 01/03/2012 21:49

I was around 25-26 weeks before I felt my little guy kicking me - I wouldn't worry. Although I did get jealous of all the people saying they'd been feeling theirs for months before that Envy

MockCroc · 01/03/2012 21:58

You have all cheered me up lots! I have been quite calm about it until the last few days, but I've becoming increasingly concerned. I will chill out again. Thanks!

its horrible isnt it? Im at the same point as another girl at work and she has had kicks for a good 9 weeks longer than me, it really got me down everytime that she asked having to say that I felt very little, today Ive had a foot in my rib all day and Ive almost wished for those days back (bloody ungreatful I know)

Tweedledeedum · 01/03/2012 22:17

Me too, first baby and I'm 31 weeks now with an anterior placenta, really didn't start feeling movements that I was sure were the baby until 27ish weeks. Plus that was only around the sides of my placenta, down low or to the sides, and only if I was very still in bed or leaning/hunched up forward at my desk - he seems to hate that and gives me a punch! Don't worry, in a few weeks you'll feel more as her bones harden and less room as everyone else has said...

Belmo · 01/03/2012 22:27

I had an anterior placenta and didn't start feeling kicks til about 28 weeks, she was never much of a mover tbh but is more than making up for it now she's here! Try not to worry :)

scarletforya · 01/03/2012 23:45

I'm 23 weeks on my first, also with an anterior placenta and only feel little small movements at the very sides of my abdomen.
She was moving around loads at my 21 week scan but I couldn't feel anything.
I think it's pretty usual with an anterior placenta.

We listened to the heartbeat last night which was lovely. The baby decided to get active at the same time so it let me confirm to myself that the funny internal twinges I had been feeling from time to time are her. I had been wondering whether it was simply that my bladder was taking on a life of its own! Amusingly, having got all stressed and posted this yesterday, I was sitting watching the television yesterday with a heavy cat leaning on me and I am sure I felt her kick him...

Thank you for this as i am in a very similar position! I'm still only 21 weeks so a bit behind you but not felt anything yet. Feel a little bit cheated to be honest so hope i start feeling her soon:)

Thanks for everyone's reasurance.xx

BlueAndRedMakePurple · 02/03/2012 11:41

I'm 25 weeks, with an anterior placenta and a breech baby whom I suspect is back to back, this is DC4 and his movements are faint and very strange compared to the other 3. I know he's breech because I can feel him kicking down below, and I suspect he's back to back because I only get the odd punch high up, whereas with the others I could see them physically moving and sticking thier backs and bums out of the side of my bump.

puzzletree · 02/03/2012 16:53

I'm pregnant with DS3 and have got an anterior placenta this time. With the previous two I felt movements much earlier and by this point (22 weeks) I was getting limbs visibly poking out all the time, this time the movements are far less obvious, I have to sit/lie and concentrate to notice them. I think having an anterior placenta makes a huge difference.

4madboys · 02/03/2012 17:11

i had this with no 5, i didnt feel her kicks till much later than the 20wk scan and it took ages before i felt them regularly and they were proper big kicks, this was because of the anterior placenta. my other pregnancies the placenta wasnt anterior an di felt them much more. all was fine tho :)

TessTosterone · 02/03/2012 17:44

Same as morethemerrier. This is my 4th and my first anterior placenta and I can certainly feel a lot less this time round.
