26 weeks and itching....

I am 26 weeks pregnant with DC4 and couldnt sleep two nights ago due to itching feet, yesterday I was itching all over, legs, arms, back, backs of hands and mainly face, head and neck. Not severely to break the skin or leave marks just annoyingly every few minutes having to scratch. Last night in bed I was fine, felt a little itchy at times but not scratching did havea shower before bed. Woke up this morning and itchy again mainly face and ankles and palms of hands, there is no rash just this annoying itching sensation. Palms of hands feel like they are almost burning like when you have Been out in the cold and come in and put them on radiator or under hot tap that sort of deep itchy sensation.
Does it need to be investigated yet as per green notes to contact health professional if persistant itching a occurs or shall I just wait to see if gets worse and persists before wasting anyone's time. I am not leaving marks and slept ok last night apart from achy hips? I never had this with the other 3 so unsure if I am worrying unduly and just skin stretching, don't want to waste anyone's time and sound pathetic, it's my fourth I should know how pregnancy goes by now :)

I'm 34 weeks pregnant with my first and itching is the only symptom i've ever had, the first 15/16 weeks were horrendous i was rubbing myself against stuff for a scratch lol i still itch every day

It's hormones apparently!

go and see your midwife, itching can be a symptom of liver problems in pg. worth getting it checked out!

AlanMoore · 01/03/2012 11:00

agree with Kveta - I am 26wks too and very itchy but only at top of my bump. Hands/feet needs checking out with midwife, give them a ring.

AlanMoore · 01/03/2012 11:01

ps what are these green notes I keep reading about on here? I'm on 2nd pg and never had any green notes!

whenhenshaveteeth · 01/03/2012 11:05

Talk to your midwife (you too millystar!), it could be obstetric cholestasis. I had it and it sounds similar. It happened at 37 wks and my feet and hands were the most itchy but my bump and other parts of body were too. It was so bad that I had to scratch myself with the hairbrush. If it is you'll need to be monitored but you won't be wasting anyone's time if it's not, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Kveta · 01/03/2012 11:05

no idea about green notes, but the condition is called obstetric cholestasis. I just googled because I couldn't remember how to spell it earlier!

Kveta · 01/03/2012 11:06

ah xpost, sorry!

AceOfBase · 01/03/2012 11:06

Does it feel a bit like crawling under your skin? Particularly in palms/soles? Worse at night? Dark urine/light stools? If you pull down your bottom lid does your eye look yellowish?

smithylovesme · 01/03/2012 11:08

Thanks, I know itching can be sign of a liver disorder, wonderful google :) I have a new midwife and have no idea how to contact her. Would have to contact the antenatal ward at hospital, I know they wil ask me to come in and have a blood test etc. but just unsure if it's serious enough with only 2-3 days of annoying itching!
Alanmoore the green notes are your handheld notes you are suppose to carry everywhere with you with all your pregnancy information in. The midwife completes and gives them to you when you book In with her, are you in the Uk?

I have Been looking at urine and stools for changes in colour but nothing to report there. Wasn't worse last night, but this morning it is like something is crawling under my skin and like little prickles on legs. I even went and bought a nit comb yesterday my head was that itchy but luckily all clear Blush just this burning itching sensation on my palms is new today,it does relieve them when itched, but good to rub something hard on them hairbrush sounds ideal actually whenhenshaveteeth
No jaundice either have been checking eyes.

Please do go and get a simple blood test to rule out OC.

I had OC when PG with DS2 and itching can "come and go" like you describe. I also had no yellowness in my eyes and no change to my wee/stools when my OC first started (that all came later!).

If it is OC you will need some medication and monitoring and it's best that is done ASAP.

AlanMoore · 01/03/2012 11:28

My notes aren't green, they're see through...they weren't green in last pg either though they were a manageable size! They are enormous this time, not sure how they expect anyone to carry them anywhere. when I have midwife appointments I have to put them in a special Christmas Waitrose bag for life that is the only one that can accomodate them!

Maybe it's cos I live oop North. I look a right tit with a Waitrose bag in our doctor's as well, there isn't one for miles. I nicked it off my mum and dad who live in a posher area :)

AlanMoore · 01/03/2012 11:30

Sorry for hijack, I didn't know how to spell obstetric cholewhatsit either but please do ring the midwifery office or antenatal ward ASAP and get some advice, OP, it's not worth stalling over.

whenhenshaveteeth · 01/03/2012 11:43

PS: No jaundice, no dark urine for me either, just itching for 2 days, after which I call the midwife who told me to come to hospital IMMEDIATELY!

smithylovesme · 01/03/2012 11:43

Thanks going to hospital now for bloods and monitoring.

oh, and if you're 26 weeks, come and join us on the june thread :o

faintpinkline · 01/03/2012 11:49

I had OC and what you've got sounds very like it. I'm glad you're going into hospital to get it checked. If you do have it, you'll get vitimin K tablets, strong anti-histimines and extra scans to check baby over the next few weeks. The other thing you should know is that there is a strong chance they'll decide to induce you a couple of weeks early but the hospital will talk to you about all of that.

Hope everything goes well and don't be scared the symptoms are treatable and it disappears just as soon as baby arrives. I'm 17 weeks at the moment and fully expecting that I'll get OC again this time round.
