A holiday at 28 weeks?

lucylookout · 29/02/2012 10:34

I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant with ds2. He's 4 so my last pregnancy seems a long way off. I'd like to go on holiday with dh and ds before new baby is born, but because we're waiting for some money to be paid to us, can't go before the end of April. I don't like flying, especially not pregnant, so we're thinking of getting a Eurostar to Paris, spending a day or two at Disneyland and then getting fast train to south of France. I know every one is different, but does this sound doable at 28 weeks? I did have SPD with ds, but have been super careful this time and so far it's hardly bothering me at all (just at night). Sorry! I know it's a bit of a pointless question, it's just I want to have a nice time with my lovely ds and would like some reassurances (or honest warnings) about my holiday plans!

Thanks pootle, unfortunately we're with virgin but that sounds like a good offer!

I can't help as I am first timer but I have booked a holiday for when I will be 26-27 weeks. I would say go for it, it's only 8 weeks away so hopefully you'll still be feeling good.

googietheegg · 29/02/2012 11:10

I'm currently 29 weeks and although I could do it, I wouldn't really want to as sitting for long periods isn't a tonne of fun and I'm getting really tired in the afternoons.

Congratulations on number 4!

lucylookout · 29/02/2012 11:22

Thanks both (sorry for confusion but ds is aged 4, not number 4!) not sure I'd be brave enough to attempt it with 3 others! Hmm, googie, see your point. DLP might be tiring, but trains to south of france are quickish, and once there with any luck I'd be able to spend a bit of time lounging around and taking the occasional dip, with dh being on 'run after ds' duty! See, I'm talking myself round aren't I!

Take things slowly lucylookout my DP and I went to Glasgow when I was 29 weeksand I had to rest a lot. Have plenty of drinks as it helps and when you can chill on the bed xx

capecath · 29/02/2012 13:00

DH and I went to Geneva last time as a pre-baby holiday around that time and it was wonderful! Did have to rest more than normal but that should be part of your holiday anyway - plenty relaxing :) We even had to fly to South Africa (family emergency) just before that which wasn't as fun - major swelling on flights. We also went camping about 30 weeks which was perhaps a little mad looking back but also managed fine (besides a number of loo trips in the night)! Make the most of your time before baby, I'd say. Make sure you rest when you need to, and don't go anywhere too hot (I really felt the heat last pregnancy)!

I went to Barcelona when I was about 30 weeks pregnant. My doctor groaned at me when I told her I was going, but then quickly jumped into action and recommended the bus tours! I thought it would be really dull, but actually it was the best tip ever. We bought a weekend bus pass and spend our time jumping on and off the bus. When I had some energy - jump off and have a wander. When I was tired - jump on and look at the scenery. Perfect. If you don't want to go to Barcelona because of the flight then I'm sure Paris has similar tours.

Alligatorpie · 29/02/2012 14:48

We are going to beach resort for a week when I will be 30 weeks. I wanted a last break with dh and dd (6) before the baby comes too. I thought the beach would be good, as I can chill by the pool if I am tired and dh will take dd swimming. Luckily it is only a one hour flight so don't be too bad.

fluffygal · 29/02/2012 15:07

I went on my honeymoon at 26 weeks, got a letter from the midwife in case anyone asked how far along I was but no one did!

surfmama · 29/02/2012 15:09

you are all so brave, I don't want to leave the house, what has happened to me?!!

Marenostrum · 29/02/2012 17:23

I did London to Avignon (via Lille Europe, you just have to change platforms, it is quite handy) when I was about 28 weeks and it was fine, if a little long and dull. If you have your DH to help and you take it is easy, there's no reason why you should worry. Make sure you carry your EHIC card with you just in case, and enjoy!

lucylookout · 29/02/2012 19:16

Thanks for your advice all. Marenostrum what's an EHIC card? I think breaking the journey in Paris will help and then the trains look so good in France I'm hoping it'll be OK. The TGV to Perpignan train takes about 5 hours, but at least I can get up and walk around/sit down as I want, and as far as DS goes that's some colouring in, a picnic lunch and a film or 2, so shouldn't be too gruelling [smiles naively]

I hope so because I'm going in holiday (with an 8 hour flight) at 32 weeks..... When we get there it'll be v relaxing and minimal walking though. Disneyland sounds a bit too energetic for me, but I'm probably just lazy! Enjoy!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 29/02/2012 19:56

EHIC - It replaced the E111 and is absolutely essential in case you need medical assistance while you're on holiday (as I discovered when I got very ill in Spain) as it entitles you to whatever treatment would be available to locals. Your insurer won't cover what the EHIC would have covered so you really need to take one. That reminds me, check your insurer will cover your baby if you go into early labour. I know it's the last thing you want to think of, but if that did happen you'd want to make sure that baby's treatment is covered as well as yours.

Marenostrum · 29/02/2012 22:38

Yes, it is the European Health Insurance Card, as Truth says it gives you access to healthcare in the country you are visiting as long as it is part of the EC, just like you would have the NHS in the UK.

Ponyphysio · 29/02/2012 22:56

I went to Perpignan just before Christmas when I was around 30 weeks - I phoned my travel insurance and they said I was covered as long as I hadn't been advised NOT to travel. You can apply for EHIC online and it's delivered really quickly. I have never done the train journey down from Paris, but my bro and his GF did it last summer and said it was marvellous - so sit back, relax and enjoy the journey!

BelleStar · 01/03/2012 00:48

I went to the south of France for 2 weeks at 28 weeks. No problems at all! I rang my travel insurance company beforehand to check cover. As I was flying I also had a letter from GP confirming no. of weeks and fitness to travel.

The holiday itself was lovely. The hardest part was the torture of not being able to have the cheese and wine! I also struggled a bit in the heat, but I think in April you should be OK. Have an amazing time!

Bubbaluv · 01/03/2012 01:08

If your DH is going too then it sounds pretty straight forward to me. If you need to rest then DH can take over all entertainment responsibilities with your DS1.
Can't see an issue unless your SPD really flares up. Get some good insurance in case you need to cancel.

capecath · 01/03/2012 08:17

blushmare with a long flight make sure you can put your feet up somewhere! I freaked out when feet and calves started swelling majorly in less than two hours and still had 10 to go!! See if you can get the space with the wall in front of you (but they'll prob offer that to you anyway).

blushingmare · 01/03/2012 08:42

Thanks cape - that's a good tip! My DH is hoping if I look pathetic enough we might get upgraded - ha ha ha!

HardCheese · 01/03/2012 09:22

I went to Switzerland over Christmas at 27/8 weeks - flew London-Geneva, then two trains up into the Bernese Oberland - and felt very well, did a lot of walking in the snow etc. It felt wonderful to get some clear air and sun. I did need to rest more than usual, and I didn't have other children, but even though the day before we left I was doubting the wisdom of going because I felt tired and disinclined for bother or company (we were staying with friends and their extended family), I was delighted to have made the effort and felt in the better of it. Check with your airline about whether you need a doctor/midwife's letter, though.

ShowOfHands · 01/03/2012 09:24

First pregnancy I went on holiday at 8 months. Second at 7 months. And then a long weekend away at the end (waters broke 4 days later). Do it.

AlexTasha · 01/03/2012 11:59

Hi, just wanted to say that I am going to Paris this weekend and I will be 28 weeks, getting the Eurostar over there. I never thought this would be an issue so hopefully you have a nice holiday :)

lucylookout · 01/03/2012 12:36

Thanks all, it seems like there are a lot of pregnant adventurers out there!
