I'm not over 40, and don't have diabetes but didn't want to read and run..I feel for you..you must be so scared, but it is a good sign its in the right place! It is very normal to feel scared at the beginning though..does the dad know? Maybe he could be more of a comfort?

Beans1977 · 29/02/2012 07:32

I'm not over 40 either, but it's horrible to be frightened and alone so I didn't want to read and run either. I lost my baby last year and am now PG again and I am scared stiff - so you are not alone on that front.

But congratulations on this pregnancy! As confuzed said - it's great that the baby is in the right place this time - the odds are in your favour that all will go well.

Can you talk to your DP or a family member about your concerns? If there is no one in RL to help you, people on MN are a really great support - I've had a rough ride through this PG as I started out with twins and have lost one, and people on here have been a comfort.

Try the Due in October 2012 thread - some of the ladies on there are over 40 and have anxieties about this.

I'm not over forty but I am diabetic and pregnant.

Are you T1 or T2? Is this your first pregnancy, and if not - were you diabetic then?

Being pregnant and diabetic is hard work and can be frightening at times (done it twice now) but I don't know what advice to give you without knowing more.

You need to get your diabetes clinic to refer you to their diabetic antenatal clinic ASAP though.

Hi Tennerlady,

I wouldn't worry too much about the dates. Dating from last period only works if you have a textbook 28 cycle with ovulation on day 14. Also, the egg can take different times to travel down and implant giving you slightly different scan dates. (As someone who had to track their ovulation obsessively using ov sticks and temperature tracking - this pregnancy (17 weeks) I have always been a couple of days ahead on scans and at the 12 week scan got put 4 days ahead which means I ovulated before a positive ovulation stick and well before a temperature rise which is impossible.) Also, at around 5/6 weeks the embryo is so tiny that a slightly different measurement on a scan can make a hell of a difference to your dates.

Regarding the diabetes (I don't have diabetes but I do have PCOS and blood sugar level issues) and I think it is very important to keep your blood sugar levels under control as if they go hay wire it can impact your homones which could affect the pregnancy. So I would get to the Doctor as quickly as possible.

Good luck and try not to worry.

I wouldn't worry about being advised not to have more children - that's your decision, not your doctor's, and unplanned pregnancies happen to diabetics as much as anyone else anyway. Any doctor will know this.

Glad to see you have been in touch with your consultant. My knowledge of T2 and gestational diabetes is limited but I think you will need to come off metformin and start taking some insulin. You will also need to be taking 5mg folic acid as soon as possible.

Good luck. And yes, try to enjoy it - I know it's hard, diabetic pregnancies are not very enjoyable even when they go smoothly!

Ha don't I know it but first 2 boys not bad but last one bit hair raising with the heart defects and kidney problems not to mention having appendices at 18 wks and having them out so fingers crossed this one goes a bit easier ha ha I'm only 7yrs older and over 40 but if I coped last time I was also caring for my dad he was dying of cancer and he passed 5 days before Harry born then I can do it this time feeling positive is the best way to be (well that's how I am today ha ha ) god knows what I will be like tomorrow ect by the way don't think me stupid but I gather ur type 1 did you have any extra test for defects ?

Hi, I don't know if this helps but I was 39 when I had my DD2. Although not diabetic, I was very high risk for pregnancy because in my first pregnancy I developed life-threatening pre-eclampsia very early (between 25-26 weeks). DD1 did not survive and I spent time in intensive care with HCPs not being certain if I would pull through. I was 37 with DD1, and considered low risk - no medical problems at all before this.

Given this I was terrified and traumatised (and labelled as "highest risk") but my second pregnancy was completely normal right up to the end (DD2 was lying transverse so delivered by ELCS). Pregnancy is unpredictable and many of even the highest risk ones turn out ok.

You will be deemed high risk but there are good things about that IMO (consultant care, lots of scans, lots of monitoring which helped pick up quickly the more minor problem I had with DD2 at term).

I've also had two miscarriages so know about early pregnancy loss too. Really hope you make it this time :-)

kickingking · 05/03/2012 11:59

Yes, I am T1. I had an additional scan at 20 weeks with both pregnancies to check for for heart defects in more detail (both fine). I also have scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks to monitor baby's growth and health of the placenta, but they don't look for defects as that's already been ruled out.
