I'm 31 + 3 and have decided I should really be stocking up on nappies but I have absolutely no clue where to start!
Do brands & non brands differ that much?
Also how many size 1 and 2 nappies should I be buying before the baby arrives? And how many should I be packing in my hospital bag?

I bought a pack of Huggies and pampers today both size 1 thought I better start somewhere, don't want to waste money buying rubbish ones or then wrong size etc.

Any nappy advice would be very appreciated :)

Thank you xx

hi
you will use alot more nappies than you realise! my daughter was 6lb11oz at birth I bought heaps of pampers tesco and asda (didnt like huggies)size 1 nappies and I still needed to buy more she dropped in weight to 5lb11oz so was in size ones for ages!
id say 10 packs of size 1 then to be on the safe side start buying size 2.xx

PotteringAlong · 28/02/2012 16:55

I'm a fan of asda own brand!

i have brought my nappies early as its me of those things that you absolutely need :) my theory is it keeps my costs down when babies born, did you get your bounty pack from mw as there is a voucher in the book for a free pack from tesco. i liked huggies and pampers but have brought whatever on offer so have a mixture, its difficult as you have no idea what weight your baby may me so probably get a few packs of each, if you get one of the small packs i put that in my hospital bag last time. fwiw i used approx 7 nappies a day with my last baby :)

Don't get too many yet as you don't know which will suit the baby - I had one that was fine in huggies, one that was better in pampers. You will be changing millions to start with to try to buy them on offers. I found newborn ones from Asda or Sainsburys worked fine, Sainburys did a small/prem baby size that fit well for a smaller full term baby, round the 6.5lb mark

It really depends on the size of your baby but to give you an idea mine was 7lb 8 so pretty average. I took 1 pack of newborn size to hospital but didn't use even half of them (was in for 2 days). She grew out of them and into size 2 in 2 weeks and was in size 3 by about 4 weeks. I was using roughly 10 nappies a day at first. They grow quickly so don't buy too many size 1 or 2, I would say around 3 packs of each would be enough.

I found huggies leaked a lot and pampers to be the best but I've heard others say the other way around. I've tried asda own brand which were fine and Sainsburys Eco which were pretty good too, both far better than huggies.

yes of course if your baby is bigger then you will go up in sizes quicker.

I like the huggies organic - they are softer and less plasticky than other ones. But I think it is just each to their own! I did end up with nappies lfet over when DD moved up to the next size but I gave them to my HV to pass on - she said she always has someone who would appreciate them.

My DS never wore size 1's, he was 8lb 6 when born and we went straight into size 2's. Pampers never suited him, I personally found huggies or aldi own brand to be best when he was smaller, the aldi ones are the only ones I found to never leak by the time he got to size 4's! Buy a box of each brand you would consider using, probably best with mainly size 2's as you will definitely use them, and a smaller amount of size 1 as you can always buy more if needed. I know loads of people who ended up giving away unused size 1 nappies as they had stockpiled loads!

Happenstance · 29/02/2012 08:16

i have a bag of huggies a bag of pampers and thats it, unless you live miles from a supermarket i wouldn't bother stocking up, huggies have never suited my DD, she leaks in them always has but doesn't mean they won't suit baby.

so buy a couple of brands and see what you think.

I may be a voice alone in the wilderness, but have you looked into washable/reusable nappies? The investment is well worthwhile if you are planning on having more than one child. The washing isn't that onerous: one wash a day. And if you get a decent quality brand, they dry really quickly.
I'm a big fan of HoneyChild www.honeychildnz.com/ or bambino mio.

Kiwiinkits · 29/02/2012 21:02

Don't get hemp inserts, as they start to stink after a few washes. Sythetic, quick-drying materials are best.

Alligatorpie · 01/03/2012 03:25

I would just get a few of several different kinds, depending on how much storage you have, then you can see which ones you / baby likes best. I wouldn't get any size 2 for a while. My dd was 6.15 oz and she wore newborn pampers for ages. She didn't ever make it to size 4 as was toilet trained by then.
You can always find diapers on sale somewhere.

SilentBoob · 01/03/2012 04:37

I don't think nappies are necessarily a good thing to stock up on pre-newborn.

You don't know what size to get (my babies tend to go into the second size from day 1 so I'd have wasted my money on tiny ones).

You don't know what shape your baby will be - a nappy that works for a round, fat baby might leak all over the place for a long thin baby.

You don't know what their skin will tolerate - I ended up buying special bleach-free nappies because Huggies / Pampers et al gave her a sore bum.

You don't know what growth spurts your baby will have - you might get through one size very quickly.

Better to wait and see what works for your baby. It's great to save money, but a nappy that squirts yellow poo out the leg 3 times a night is not a great investment. Aren't there usually offers on nappies in one supermarket or another? They'll still be on offer when your baby is born.
