I'm 15 weeks today and just had my midwife appointment, she tried to hear the hearbeat but couldnt, she did say she felt the baby moving around and we heard the blood flowing through the cord but should I be worried?
Shes booked me in again for 2 weeks time just so she can hear the heartbeat.

yes I would be but only because I worry about everything and my hormones are making everything worse. It is quite normal not to hear the heartbeat, they wriggle and move around. do you know where the placenta is, this can have an effect on hearing also. are you feeling any flutters?

LotusPalm · 28/02/2012 13:49

No - not if baby moving around and what not. 15 weeks is quite early to hear heartbeat and it could be that the placenta is in the way, or the baby is hiding!

thejaffacakesareonme · 28/02/2012 13:49

I think this is quite normal. There've been quite a few threads on this in the past if you want to do a search. I think that because babies are so small at that stage it can be difficult to pick up their heartbeats. I remember that when I went for an appointment at 16 weeks the mw warned me that she may not be able to pick up the heartbeat.

goingmadtrying · 28/02/2012 13:49

no i wouldn't worry in my area they don't try and listen till 24 weeks because up until then its hit and miss and previously they would be referring more ladies to hospital due to worrying them unnecessarily. im having twins and mw did hear them at 15+5 but she only listeNed as i was worrying, I've since brought my own monitor and some days get them but others like yesterday could hear them moving loads and a very faint hb every know and.again

Flisspaps · 28/02/2012 13:58

I wouldn't worry either - our area is the same as goingmadtrying where they don't even attempt to listen to the heartbeat at AN appointments. The reason? Because it can be bloody hard to find and women end up worrying unnecessarily :)

MillyStar · 28/02/2012 14:09

No don't worry

I think it's a bit stupid of her to try to be honest some wont until 20 weeks, a consultant tried mine at 14 weeks and i cried all day when he got nothing, it's especially worse when you're not feeling movements yet to reassure you!

I wouldnt let anyone try again till i was 21 weeks and they found it pretty quick then

PoppyS34wantsgoatscheese · 28/02/2012 14:14

The MW warned me this morning that she was going to try and listen for hb, but she may not hear it as I'm only 17wks, so try not to worry (although I know that's much easier to say than do!).

Lovemarmite · 28/02/2012 14:25

No don't worry. I saw my mw yesterday and warned me that the hb might not be heard as they're still quite small. She said that if we can't hear it, then I would go back a week or so later. I'm 16 weeks.

You could join our August group 'Due in August' as some of us have had this advice and hearing it from others is really helping with the worries.

melliebobs · 28/02/2012 14:54

i wouldn't be worried. At 16 weeks i was fortunate enough to hear mine, but mw warned me in advance that at that stage they are really little and still have plenty of hiding spaces and it can be a ball ache to try and find it. In fact according to guidlines it isn't something the mw HAS to offer in such appointents due to this

MammaInTheMaking · 28/02/2012 16:04

Please don't worry. I'll echo what others have said...at my 16 week appointment the dr said she wasn't going to attempt to listen as she may not get it. Didn't get another offer for a listen until 25 weeks last week. Although i could feel baby moving about ferociously the doppler couldn't get a clear sound. MW wasn't worried in the slightest because of all the wiggling going on. I suppose we'll get another chance when i go for my next appointment. It's very easy for it to play on your mind but please don't see it as a bad sign, there are so many factors which would make it very difficult to hear so early on :)

SoozleQ · 28/02/2012 16:07

Don't worry. They don't even try to hear the heartbeat in my area at 16 weeks, even if you plead, because it's a bit hit and miss and they don't want people worrying if they fail to find it.

Tweedledeedum · 28/02/2012 16:11

Yes have also been told that earlier on it is a bit hit and miss. Even now at 31 weeks mine is hard for them to find because of my anterior placenta, so it might be that too?

miaboo · 28/02/2012 16:28

Thanks Ladies, she didnt seem to worried about it, but you know how much things play on your mind!
If she just hadent bothered trying to find it in the first place then I wouldnt be worried now!, I'll just keep my fingers crossed for 2 weeks time then, I have a good sized baby bump for baby number 3 so I'll try and relax now Hmm

I wouldn't worry - my GP tried to find a heartbeat at about 12 weeks, and I couldn't hear anything - in fact, I didn't hear a heartbeat until 24 weeks.
