Rhesus Neg/miscarriage question

HI ladies, i am not actually pregnant. Currently in ttc#1 misery with nothing happening in nearly two years. Quick question though, i am AB negative and my husband is 0+. I know that rhesus neg doesn?t seem to be a problem in first pregnancy and you tend to get the injection much later in pregnancy anyway. However, when we first ttc, i fell pregnant pretty much immediately but m/c at 7 wks. I have been reading about this antiD injection and that some women are given it after a miscarriage if they are rhesus negative. Does anyone know whether my miscarriage was too early to even have been a problem with developing these antibodies or should I have had this injection? Can?t believe how different my blood type is to DH, obviously self diagnosing now adn thinking we have some blood incompatibility thing going on. Sad

Sorry to hear about your loss Sad I am -ve and DH is +ve. I have had anti-d after each child was born but not after my miscarriages as they were 6-7 weeks. I was told that it is not necessary before 12 weeks as there is not enough of the baby's potentially incompatible blood to mix with yours and cause antibodies to future pregnancies.

Anti-d is a human blood product and therefore carries infection risk (albeit tiny) so it is better only to be given it when completely necessary. (FWIW I turn down prophylactic doses at 28wks and just have it after birth when there is a true 'risk' of blood mixing - but policy on prophylaxis does vary depending where you are)

But that's a digression..... So no you don't need it after a very early loss and please don't worry that you and DH are blood incompatible- diff blood types is not an issue.

Best of luck with your ttc x

Hi joycep
just spoke to my mw this morning about this as me too is rhesus negative.
She told me that the baby doesn't start to produce blood until about 11 weeks and so if a m/c is earlier than this, then no antibodies would have been produced.

She also said that it's a precaution only and given later on in pregnancy and that they have only started to routinely offer it.
Hope this helps and good luck for the future x

I love that MN can take someone from an anxious wreck to reassured and confident in seconds Smile

joycep I am also TTC %231, am O- and MC 7 weeks (confirmed yesterday) on 4th cycle. I had exactly the same question.

Thanks for advice bears and marmite.

That was meant to say first child - would be happy with one for now, 238 would be a case o be careful what you wish for =P

Hi Joycep, sorry to hear about your mc and good luck ttc!

I had a mmc at 8 weeks and am rhesus -ve with my DH being +ve. I was also told that it shouldn't be a problem in early pregnancy but as I had surgical intervention I was given anti d as a precaution as there was more chance of mixing of blood due to the procedure, they stressed it was just a precaution and only because I was having the erpc.

All the best!! Grin
