Hi- I went to the GP this morning as I'm at my wits end with sickness and feeling like I have no energy at all. She prescribed Stemetil & told me it was safe in pregnancy, but I got home & read the leaflet & now I'm scared of taking it! It's an anti-psychotic, & has all kindas of side effects! I don't know what to do- I'm off work as I'm so bad, and it's affecting my interaction with my older child as I feel so bad. :-(

if your puking is so bad you are at risk of being so dehydrated your kidneys are packing up then you might feel like trying it.

I took it for 8 solid months - Rectally! made me feel a bit tired and woozy but after not eating for weeks and weeks i suspect i might have felt a bit woozy anyway.

Oh that makes me feel better that you took it for 8 months. Did it make you feel better in terms of sickness? I'm assuming everything was ok with baby! Smile

Ps I'm still sat with the packet of tablets in front of me deciding whether to take them or not.

I wouldn't imagine your GP would prescribe it if she didn't feel it was safe. I sympathise, constant sickness/nausea is exhausting. I've found sea bands very effective in combating my constant nausea but I wasn't being sick

I've taken it. Had really bad sickness with ds1 and took metaclopramide (sp) which just knocked be out. Took it for a good 5 months.

This time I asked to try something different and was prescribed stemitel. It can make you sleepy but I was fine on it, better than on metaclopramide. I took it this time from around 8 weeks until 25 ish weeks.

It won't do you or baby any good if your sick. Keep hydrated. If the tablets make you too sleepy there are other ones to try.

Congratulations btw Grin

I've taken it too, I started at about 8 weeks but I didn't need to take it the whole time, 30 weeks now, still being sick occasionally, however not enough to warrant taking anything. Hope it works for you!

How long did it take to take effect, everyone?

If your doctor has prescribed them I would take them! I had terrible morning sickness with dd1 and dd2 and can't remember which dd I took them with. But both my dds are fit and healthy :) dd1 is 4 dd2 is 2 im now pregnant with dc 3 and have been given cyclizines . My doctor is very cautious and really don't like prescribing anything but I needed something as was so dehydrated :(. Hope they start easing sickness 4 u soon x

I took Stemetil from about 8w through to the very day DD was born! In fact, I didn't throw up much after about 24w but I still felt very nauseous at times and was too scared to stop taking it in case I did start throwing up Grin. DD was born 4 weeks ago and she is absolutely fine, no side effects there at all.

As for timescales, I think it took a few days to really have an effect. However, there are several types of anti-emetics so if Stemetil isn't having an affect within a week or two, or you keep getting worse, I would go back and talk to your GP and see if you can try another drug.

Hope you feel better soon x

I took this (prochlorperazine) recently for disembowelling-type nausea. I found it worked within 15 mins and really helped me be able to function. I've been able to stop taking it this week. The MW said either my hormones are fluctuating or it has 'sorted me out', which I think means controlling the nausea and somehow having a long-lasting effect. Who knows. Either that or it's a mmc, but let's not think about that. The point it, it was a wonder drug for me!

DreamingOfPeace · 24/02/2012 22:16

I took it. Never read the leaflet as I knew I needed it- was barely managing to eat or drink, dehydrated. Worked for me.

Just do it. It is widely used. They just won't license anything for pregnancy. I was really bad and still managed to get off it but only puking in manageable amounts then by 15 weeks. 32 weeks now and they always tell me my twins look fine on each growth scan.

Hope you feel better soon.
