Sleeping bras - I can't decide whether I need one.

Hello. I have bought lots of maternity and baby stuff in the last few weeks. When I looked at my bank statement I was shocked to see how much money I have spent. I am now trying to decide what is really necessary and what I can take back to the shops. I can't make up my mind whether maternity sleeping bras are necessary, even though I have done the search thing. My bust is a normal size and I am not uncomfortable at night. What is the purpose of a maternity sleeping bra, is it to make the wearer more comfortable or is it to prevent sagging afterwards? (The latter would be a good reason for me to wear one). Thanks.

i have been sleeping in my regular bras throughout pregancy and thats worked for me

Grumpla · 24/02/2012 11:37

I have quite big boobs and just slept in a non-wired bra throughout pregnancy to feel more supported & comfy.

I wouldn't think you need special maternity sleep bras - if you already have a maternity bra or a non-wired bra jut use those! Or if you are not huge to begin with you might find a support vest / crop top under your pjs does the job.

I have larger than average breasts and I have done just fine without a maternity sleeping bra. I haven't had that much boob pain though. If you are comfortable without one then you don't need one. It won't make any difference to sagging - no bra can do that!

There isn't a lot of maternity gear you do actually need. And a lot of it can be got quite cheaply. It's easy to get carried away but the price of the stuff is ridiculous.

The things I have found truly necessary are my New Look maternity jeans, some stretchy "yoga" pants, a few maternity t-shirts and a nice dress I got to wear at xmas and have worn out a few times since. If you are working somewhere that needs smart clothes then you need a couple of pairs of basic black trousers and a few smarter tunic style tops. That's it really.

Mine were great and doubled as nursing bras until milk came in and I was fitted properly.

I've bought a couple of non-wired bras for sleeping but I have already incredibly painful boobs so these are a must for me to be able to turn over in bed without wincing in pain. I'm only 8 weeks so haven't really bought anything else yet.

I got a non wired granny bra for £3 from Asda. It's actually more supportive than a "maternity" bra such as I tried on in Mothercare.

Alligatorpie · 24/02/2012 13:43

I have a large chest, and I have never worn one to sleep in. I wear a tank top with a shelf and pj bottoms, my normal sleeping clothes. I wouldn't spend the money if I were you.

Sleep bras have a use in the first weeks after birth when your boobs tend to leak all over the sheets, they keep your boobs in one place and hold the breast pads in. Its a bit more comfortable than a standard bra with hooks at the back. Once you stop leaking everywhere and settle down they aren't necessary at all. You could get away with any stretchy top though if you are not hugely endowed.

I gave up bras (or anything else) in bed at about the 3 month mark. Then I graduated to a towel underneath me to catch they occasional random spray.

I've had three kids and I've never heard of a sleeping bra

chocolateyclur · 24/02/2012 14:11

Never heard of a sleeping bra. I always slept in a non-wired bra if I wanted a bit of support.

Flisspaps · 24/02/2012 14:19

What KatAndKit said (that's the second time today I've said that. And both times on threads about sleeping in bras)

ladyfoucault · 24/02/2012 16:06

Thank you all. Flisspaps I know there are loads of threads about sleeping bras but I wanted to find out if they have any purpose apart from making sleep more comfortable for bigger busted women and to prevent leakage. I don't have these problems (yet - I am week 34).
The only times I slept in bras was when I was too tiddly to take them off - this seems so long ago!

No, please don't think it was a dig, it was merely an observation on my part in case KatAndKit thought she'd got herself a freaky stalker!

I too am 34w, if you haven't already then come over to the April 2012 antenatal thread!

ladyfoucault · 24/02/2012 18:05

Flisspaps yeah- I'd like to. How? I have read some of it but how can I make sure I am in the stats? Do I have to join somehow? I am such a newbie! Ta.

I never needed one in either (of 2 ) pg. (36D)
In first pg, I mostly wore soft sports bras from Primark, although by second pg boobs were too big for their sizes!

Flisspaps · 25/02/2012 16:24

ladyfoucalt No, just start posting over there, to add yourself to the stats list just copy and paste the last list posted and add yourself to it. In fact, I'm not sure if I'm on it myself so I'll go over and post it now so the list is easy for you to find!

ladyfoucault · 25/02/2012 19:26

Thank you Flisspaps!

Primarni sports bras about £3/£4 a pop sorted me right out.
