hello all.

just after a bit of advice/opinion. had my 36 week check up today and sugar level was very high in urine sample (+4 i think which midwife said was very high?) so have to have the glocouse blood test tomorrow to test for gestational diabetes, but, baby is now measuring 4 weeks behind so i also have to have a growth scan afterwards although they are not overly concerned as baby very active. they said that as the baby is measuring small this goes against the norm for GB as they usually measure big if anything. admittadly i had an awfully high sugar breakfast of a pint of full sugar squash and big bowl of coco pops about 40 mins before giving my urine sample but the midwife said she still wouldn't have expected my sugar levels to be that high. does anyone know if my high sugar breakfast could be responsible for the high reading? also, if i have GB what does that mean might happen given the baby appears to be small????

thank you

Quite possible I guess, but if you have GB I think you just monitor your carbohydrate intake the duration of your pregnancy. Best of luck!

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks, and told that my baby would most likely be huge. He was 5lb 2 born at 39 weeks, so having GD doesn't always mean a big baby.

The high sugar breakfast would almost certainly have affected your reading so don't worry too much. If you do test positive for it you'll be kept a close eye on and have regular growth scans (although they didn't show up my teeny baby!)

If I have gd will that mean I have to be induced early or something like that? Was really hoping for a water birth at a mlu but midwife said I cant go to a mlu if I test positive for gestational diabetes?

I had high readings towards the end of my 1st pregnancy, a few times had GTT and it was fine, eventually it was put down to my craving for the cereal Frosties!

So I would def say that has an effect, I always start to get traces towards the end of my pregnancies in my second I had FOUR GTT and they were all within normal range, after discussions with a consultant when the same thing happened in my third pregnancy it was agreed that my body just processes it differently so thankfully avoided any more tests,as they take up a whole morning!

I am 34 weeks with DC4, not had any traces yet, so we will see what happens, my biggest baby was 7lb 5oz.

I really wouldn't worry at this stage, just take it as it comes it may not come to anything. Good luck x

Thank you, hopefully it'll just be a case of laying of the coco pops! Lol. X

My sugar level shot up on one occasion (my bump consistently measured 3 weeks "small"). I had to admit that I had eaten a donut and two cupcakes that day.

They tested again a couple of days later and I was back to normal.

My 28 week GTT was fine, but at 34 weeks I had a high sugar count. Had to measure my sugar levels 4x day, and its looking like it's my overnight fasting levels that are out of whack (everything else is under control). This is apparently more a hormaonal thing than a diet thing...
I am now taking glyburide at night (only started yesterday, so need to wait and see if this makes a difference).
My OB suggested that being on medication might mean an early induction rather than the GD itself, but I am overseas, so that might vary from place to place...
