Using the family moses basket

I'd really like some wise words here please...I'm PG with DC1 and my mum has offered me the 'family moses basket'. Loads of cousins etc have used it and I like the idea of a family thing.

BUT what's the deal with using a second-hand mattress? I thought you were supposed to have new every time? It was last used by my cousin's baby for about 5 weeks, and she had a new mattress and new bumpers etc. My mum said it would be fine for me,but I said I thought it should have another new one.

My mum is generally pretty helpful and practical, and knows far more about babies than I do...she said it would be fine as it was only used by family for a little while and sort of hinted that I was being too precious. Am I?

You can get a new mattress for as little as ten pounds so if you want to, then you should. I borrowed a crib from friends and have got a new mattress from an Ebay shop very cheaply. Kiddicare also have a wide range.

The advice that I have read is that re-using the mattress for your next child is not so bad, but you shouldn't "import" a mattress from a new home. It is probably fine if it was only used for 5 weeks but you don't know how well it has been stored in the meantime. Better to be a bit precious than be worried when replacing a moses mattress is cheap and easy. Make sure you measure it though as there are different sizes available.

In any case you can replace the mattress and your mum will never know, unless she goes poking around under the sheets.

I'd buy a new one and just not say anything Smile.

I've bought several mattresses from here and have been really impressed with them.

Great advice thank you. I think for the sake of about £10 it's best to get a new one. And thanks for the link scaredy that place is brilliant.

I think your mum is probably right and it will be fine, but I'd still change it Smile

I'm with everyone else. I think your mum is right and it would be fine - but I'd still get a new one!
