Down's test has come back - we are at high risk :(

Hi,

I am 14 weeks pregnant, and have a stressful pg with some early bleeding and early scan. I have also had hyperemesis again (this is my 3rd pregnancy).

I am 37 years old, and had a call from the screening unit - my scan showed normal nuchal fold readings (ie. not indicative of Downs), but my blood test results show I am at high risk :(

The cut off point is 1/150, and we have a risk of 1/120. It's not massively high, but I am still a bit shocked. We have decided not to tell anyone about this, as the bleeding was a worry for family anyway, and we don't want to stress my parents/siblings out if there is no need for it.

I usually share everything with my best friend, but wierdly for me, I am keeping this all quiet and digesting the information with DH, but not with anyone outside of the situation.

We have a counselling appt tomorrow morning, and have already decided we would like to have an amniocentesis to confirm the diagnosis either way.

I am a bit numb about it all - we have had 2 stress-free pregnancies, so this is a real shock to the system for me, although I may just be over-reacting.

We have carried out announcing our pg to family and friends as normal, and I am burying my head in the sand about what future decisions we may have to make regarding the pregnancy/baby if it does have Down's syndrome.

So I have no idea why I am posting this really. Does anyone have a similar experience? What was the outcome?

Cheers tiggy, glad it turned out okay for you!

One worry at a time, Boggler, one worry at a time Smile
Seeing as I miscarried my last pregnancy, I've kind of been going from scan-to-scan, doppler check-to doppler check anyway...

KatieDingus · 11/03/2012 22:13

Hi Nearlymumofone, got my 20 week scan this Friday, can't wait to see the little monkey dancing around! When's your next scan?

Boggler · 12/03/2012 16:18

Well I'm off for my amnio in a couple of hours, I thought I'd feel much more edgy than I do, but I've been counting down to today for what feels like weeks so I guess I'm relived that the day has finally arrived. I should have my results back by Thursday afternoon, if not Friday morning so we will have a definitive answer soon. I'm not particularly religious but I've been sending up a few prayer probably will send a fair few more before the weeks out!

PosiePumblechook · 12/03/2012 16:20

WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO, I had 1:9 and was clear....he's nine now!!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 12/03/2012 18:28

Hope it's all gone fine Boggler and FX for the result x

Boggler · 12/03/2012 21:57

All done, feeling achy and a bit sore.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 12/03/2012 21:59

Look after yourself x

InmaculadaConcepcion · 12/03/2012 21:59

Or, better still, get someone else too Smile

KatieDingus · 12/03/2012 22:00

Aw, hope you feel better soon Boggler.

vanimal · 13/03/2012 11:59

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes too, I feel hugely relieved, and am now enjoying telling people I am pregnant. 20 week scan is in 3 weeks tie, I'm not worried after the amnio, just glad to be getting things back to normal.

Good luck Boggler, I have my fingers crossed for you.
Be sure to take it easy if you can.

That's mine done, then.

Now for the waiting game.....

Boggler · 13/03/2012 15:47

inmaculada have you had your amnio today? Hope it went ok, take it easy and rest up. I'm still very achy today from mine yesterday but apparently that's normal. When will your results be through? Mine will be here by Friday ( possibly Thursday) so I know time will drag this week. Heres hoping we both get good news xxx

Boggler · 13/03/2012 15:49

vanimal glad you're feeling relaxed, you'll really enjoy the 20wk scan. It must be nice after the agony of the test and then waiting for the results to be able to enjoy being pregnant at last. Xxx

InmaculadaConcepcion · 13/03/2012 17:24

Yes, Boggler, it was this morning and went fine. So far so good, not too much in the aches and twinges department. The detailed scan showed all the bits and pieces to be fine, so that's encouraging.
My results are due Friday too.

Here we go, then....

nearlymumofone · 13/03/2012 18:00

boggler fingers crossed for you.

katie enjoy your scan on fri. My 20 week scan is not until early april now, and I'm already feeling really anxious about it.

KatieDingus · 13/03/2012 22:15

Fingers crossed for Boggler & Immaculada!
Thanks Nearlymumofone, please don't feel anxious about your scan, it will be nice to see your little one. I worry about needing the loo after all that water you have to drink beforehand!

Boggler · 14/03/2012 16:35

I am no longing aching after the amnio, so I've reverted to worrying about the results! I can't shake the feeling that I'm not going to get good news , my husband keeps reminding me that there's a 97% chance of everything being ok but I just feel wretched at the thought that knowing my luck it won't be. I know there have been plenty of posts from women with odds like mine that are ok but it's the what if scenario that I keep going over and over - I think I'm going to go mad before the weeks out.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 14/03/2012 18:49

Try and think positive if you can, Boggler - you'll just drive yourself mad otherwise.... Smile But I know it's not easy. We'll be okay.

Enjoy your scan on Friday, katie - and don't worry, you don't need a full bladder for scans after 15 weeks.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 14/03/2012 18:50

Oh sorry, it was Nearly's scan, wasn't it! Blush
I'm sure it'll be fine. Enjoy seeing your LO!

Boggler · 15/03/2012 14:29

Just had the dreaded phone call and everything's ok!! and its going to be a girl!! There's definitely no Downs, Edwards, pataus or cystic fibrosis - I can't put into words the relief that I feel - like a huge black cloud has been blown away. :o

inmaculada and everyone else waiting for results or for tests I hope yours come back clear as well and the waiting isn't too stressful. I'm still holding your hand.

Also wanted to say thank you to all the posters who have helped me cope with this terribly stressful time - your encouragement and kind words have really helped. Thanks

PosiePumblechook · 15/03/2012 15:41

Wonderful news boggler x

Congrats Boggler, you must feel relief beyond belief. Really pleased for you. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy worry-free.

Katie good luck tomorrow. x

InmaculadaConcepcion · 15/03/2012 18:48

Boggler SO delighted for you!!
Wow, they told you the sex from the first result? Impressively fast!
What a relief. Now you can get on with enjoying your pregnancy Smile

Boggler · 15/03/2012 19:03

We had the amnio test done privately as they would do it at 15wks, so I don't know if the results come back any faster than NHS, we were told 48hrs for the initial results and another 2 weeks for the full karryotype. They asked if we wanted to know the sex and we thought why not we have a ds so a dd as well will be perfect, icing on the cake.
inmaculada when do you expect to hear? katie good luck for your test.
