I have had hypothyroidism since my 2nd baby 2 years ago. It's been hard getting my levels right and I only just felt better a few months before falling PG again. Im now PG with 3rd and 12.5 weeks. I was given an extra 25mg on booking in (so taken fron 75mg up to 100mg) and a blood test a week or 2 later had my levels under 2 so all was well. I felt ok apart from exhaused which is normal in PG>

Im now feeling awful. My heart is racing, I can't sleep, feeling more nauseous than ever, anxious and nervous feeling. All symptoms I had last year when my meds were too high.

I thought when you were PG you needed more levothyroxine? How can I get to 12.5 weeks and it suddenly be too much. That would mean I would need to be back to 75mg which is what I took before falling PG?

Did this happen to anyone else or did you just stay on an extra 25mg?

What is the implications to the baby if my meds are too high?

I will phone the Doctor first thing in the morning, it's only just occured to me as to why I might feel so bad.

Hi there, how long have you been on the extra 25mcg for? It could well be that which is making you feel over active. I am 18 weeks pregnant and been having tests every 4 weeks or so, like you my aim is to keep TSH under 2. It's still around 1 though and I haven't needed to increase my meds at all a

  • am on 125mcg a day. I would go back for another test ASAP and if necessary reduce the dose again.

Just since I booked in at 5 weeks PG. They said they always up the dose by 25mg as you need more when you are PG.

I just thought it would be very strange to be PG and not need anymore levothyroxine?

Oh well that's good to know - that you don't automatically need more.
If the doctor doesn't see me tomorrow Im still decreasing the dose as I know that is what is wrong with me.

Yes nappy Maestro, I feel like I've had 4 double shot Starbucks coffees, sicky, nervous, heart racing, flying off the handle at my two DC's and just absolutely exhausted.

I love Mumsnet for this reason. I won't look into that other thread just now nappymaestro as Im very very busy. I need to lie on the sofa and stare at the TV all night! I will look into it when im more with it though, thanks. x

Hi all,

I see a specialist (being treated for recurrent miscarriage) who is a super dooper expert in pregnancy and thyroid and he says as long as my levels are good I don't need to increase. Am pretty sure you dont need to worry about the last few weeks of being over active, just cut the dose back and get regular tests. And yes, it's fab to have somewhere we can ask all these questions! Tbh I've been managing my own thyroid for years - I slightly adjust meds depending on blood tests rather than see an endo any more. As you seem to find too I can usually tell if my thyroid output is changing. Oh fit what it's worth my specialist likes the tsh to be around 1 when pregnant and I always find I function better at that level too. Good luck with it all!
