Coughing making me vomit - pregnancy related or not?

I've had a cough for the last few days and today twice have started coughing and suddenly found myself vomiting. (Thank goodness have been by myself and not at work or out and about! Especially as the coughing strains the old pelvic floor to its absolute limits...)

Anyway, I'm 32 weeks pregnant and wondering if this vomiting thing is just because the stomach etc. is all a bit more squashed up than normal and ready to expel its contents, or whether it's just a mega-violent cough for some reason and not related to pg - I've never had anything like this before. Anyone else have similar in pregnancy and know?

There are some terrible coughs going round but you should talk to your midwife or GP to see what can be done. Feel sorry for you.

I've had this both before and during pregnancy, so haven't connected it to being specifically related to pregnancy.

If you're coughing this much, though, I second that you should talk to your midwife or GP to look after your health!

I ve had this the last week and a bit. I'm 11 + 4 and every time I coughed it made me gag so feel real sympathy for you as that is bad enough without actual vomiting. I can't offer advice as I assumed was part of my nasty cold and the gagging was relating to general pregnancy yuckiness! Hope you feel better soon

Thanks for all your responses and sympathies! Weirdly cough doesn't actually seem that bad - not uncontrollable or v painful; it's just v suddenly turned into vomiting...

Annoyingly I had a GP appt this morning, and mentioned cough but that was before the vomiting - not due for another appt for 3 or 4 weeks. Have only seen mws twice and they haven't been particularly helpful so probably wouldn't try them. I think I'll see how it goes for a day or two and call the dr if it's getting worse or not going away.

I've had terrible chesty coughs and blocked noses every morning since about 10 weeks (now 20). My chesty cough has made me vomit on several occasions (once it was bright orange! - sorry TMI!). I thought it was 'Pregnancy Rhinitis' which I've read about, but now I feel wheezy some of the time. I'm at the stage where I think it is starting to add to my insomnia, so I will probably get checked out by the GP within a couple of weeks.

So, yes, my cough did/does make me chuck sometimes, but it's generally only phlegmy (only a couple of time has it been foody too).

Oh you poor thing i had this too about 11-14 weeks in and omg! I chucked up loads! every night after dinner , i think its because when ure pg you take longer to get over things and it doesn't help not being able to treat a cough, :( mine wore off eventually but it was a right pain in the bum!
i wouldn't worry our insides are moving around so much when we are pg its probably that,
XXX hope this helps XXX

I've just got back from Drs with my cough, and she said its a virus- lots about and nowt we can do. Hey Ho. Join the chesty, chucky, pee your pants train...all aboard!

PoppyAmex · 20/02/2012 19:04

I have the exact same problem, but I know for a fact that it's just my shockingly bad gag reflex just made worse by pregnancy.

I struggle when I cough, when I brush my teeth and use mouthwash. You have my sympathy - it's horrendous.

thefurryone · 20/02/2012 21:14

Could be pregnancy related, this happened to me last time round. I wasn't sick spontaneously but found things like cleaning my teeth to vigourously or coughing would trigger off a round of vomiting.

Hope you feel better soon. If it gets really bad probably worth a call to the docs.

Mackrelmint · 20/02/2012 21:32

Well the vomiting has not re-occurred since Fri so that's a relief (just yakking up phlegm now and sinus pain set in. Think it's an improvement...)

I think it was such a shock to throw up (not normal for me at all) that I was just quite freaked out - v reassuring to hear from others w similar problems, although sorry you've all had to endure that misery! Hope you are feeling better soon twizzle and joosie!

This happened to me when I had flu during pregnancy (was visiting parents at the time, thank goodness, so people to look after me while I was at the "couldn't get out of bed even if there was a 20 pound note on the floor" stage). My parents' GP put me on ranitidine for a week (it is safe in pregnancy in small doses - in fact even gets given to babies if they have serious enough reflux), and that worked wonders, so definitely worth seeing your doc.

I am 12 weeks pregnant with my first and i also vomit almost everytime I cough, now i dont have a cough everytime but when I do its all bad however I read another thread and it says with in week 8 to 15 sometimes longer pregnant women develop extra Silvia which could be what makes us sick sometimes when we cough or when we do normal things like brushing our teeth etc. I chopped it up to normal pregnancy symptoms. Hope this helps every body
