Another toxoplasmosis neurotic!

Ok so just been out for late valentines/birthday dinner. Was very lovely but now stressing, I had duck and it was very rare! I should not have eaten it but I did. Anyway been googling and some sites seem to say it kills ducks to early for it to be passed on. But hoping someone might know a bit more and tell me what I should do? I'm only 15 weeks which also doesn't seem good news.
Can you sense the panic/guilt already?

Hi Littlemai

I try not to respond to posts like this unless I definitely know what I'm talking about, but I see that you haven't had a response yet and you're panicking, so I'll at least hold your hand and give what advice I can until someone more expert comes along.

Firstly, beware googling stuff like this, because you can find websites that support any theory about what is/isn't dangerous. Wink

Secondly, if in doubt, I look at what the NHS website has to say, and if you look here, it suggests that, although toxoplasmosis is a real risk in pregnancy, the chance of getting it in the first place is incredibly low. So maybe take a deep breath!

Thirdly, and this is a big uneducated stab in the dark - whereas it's generally agreed to be wrong wrong wrong to serve chicken or turkey in any way pink, it's the norm to serve duck rare. So I'm going to take a guess that there's something different microbiologically going on with ducks. But I don't know how that works in relation to pregnancy, and I'm not an expert, so that's maybe not a helpful comment.

Finally, I think the thing to do is just get in touch with your GP or midwife. You're probably absolutely fine, but if nothing else, you need some reassurance from someone who knows what they're talking about - especially if you're giving yourself tummy ache (I've been there too!). You're not bothering them unnecessarily - it's what they're there for.

Take care! Smile

x

Thank you Shelduck! I completely think your right! And know I should relax, it seems my hormones have a different plan though. I will stop worrying and ask someone who knows, I just try to keep my neurosis a bit secret! Thank you again reassurance and a friendly person was definitely in need xxx

I understand you must be worried. I had the same anxiety after a trip round China and Tibet whilst in early pregnancy. Best thing is to wait a few weeks and then request a blood test from your practise nurse.
Although it is not yet policy to routinely test in the UK, it is in other countries on the continent where the diet is a bit more varied and rare...
It is still fairly uncommon to contract, so I wouldn't loose sleep over it.
